Pirates declaw Panthers
48-0 in MSC match up

The Charlestown faithful poured into Corydon Central High School last Friday night as the Pirates took their sea of royal blue and drowned the homestanding Panthers. Scanning the bleachers a seat to cheer on the Pirates was a hot commodity as Charlestown started early and continued to roll to a 48-0 victory. The Charlestown defense can also celebrate their second shutout in their last three games.
"I’m proud of our defensive coaches," stated first year head coach Jason Hawkins after the victory. "Our defense played well tonight," he added.
Charlestown took the opening kick off down the field to be capped off by a Cameron Metzger 11 yard touchdown run a mere two minutes and eight seconds into the ballgame. Craig Brown tacked on the extra point to give the Pirates an early 7-0 lead.
The Pirate defense forced Corydon Central to a three and out before senior quarterback Andrew Smith hooked up with classmate Stephen Grayson. The pass covered 30 yards for Charlestown’s second touchdown in the quarter. Brown again tacked on the extra point giving the Pirates the 14-0 advantage with 6:00 left in the opening quarter.
Corydon was forced to punt again. Charlestown’s Aaron May would make the Panthers pay. The junior would scamper 54 yards for the touchdown. The punt return for the touchdown was the first Charlestown has recorded in some 10 years.
After the May touchdown Brown split the uprights for the 21-0 Pirate lead with 3:49 remaining in the quarter. The score would prove to be the last of the first stanza.
Charlestown would strike just 89 seconds into the second quarter as Metzger found some daylight for a three yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt was wide left as Charlestown held the 27-0 advantage.
The Pirates would find the endzone one more time before the halftime break. Sophomore Josh Graham took to the air as he dove from one yard out to find the goal line. Brown would nail the extra point attempt for the 34-0 Charlestown lead.
The first five minutes of the third quarter belonged to Metzger as he found himself in the endzone twice during that time. After Metzger’s second touchdown of the period and his fourth on the night, Hawkins decided to give most of his starters the rest of the night off.
The Charlestown faithful were treated to the future of Pirate football as the remainder of the ballgame was played primarily by underclassmen and starters playing in non-starting positions. After the Pirates led 48-0 Charlestown fans watched junior Damon Vest and sophomore Jake Cook take over the duties of quarterback.
"We have a lot of guys who can play football," Hawkins added. "They play hard for each other."
When the final buzzer sounded and Charlestown took the 48-0 victory, the sea of blue Pirate faithful again rushed the field. During the pep session Hawkins invited everyone to the upcoming pep rally before the rival game against Salem.
Tomorrow night a pep rally and bonfire will be held across from the football field at the old tennis courts. The bonfire will begin at 7 p.m. The Clark County Cattlemen’s Association will be on hand from 6:30 to 7 p.m. with ribeye sandwiches and drinks.
Hawkins encourages all fans to show their Pirate Pride and help fill the team with a Pirate spirit prior to the last home game on Friday night against rival Salem.
The Lions will travel to Dutch Reis Field on Friday night for the 7 p.m. kick off. Senior night festivities will be held prior to kick off.
