Pirates drop second
straight falling to Perry Central 32-7

The Pirates of Charlestown High School were looking to get back on the winning track last Friday night as they traveled to the Class A No. 6 ranked Commodores of Perry Central.

The long bus drive did not give the Pirates the outcome they were looking for as they dropped their second straight game. Charlestown fell to 2-2 on the season with the 32-7 loss.

Commodore junior Bo Gibson kept the home-standing Perry Central faithful on their feet most of the evening as he ran for three of Perry Central’s five touchdowns.

Gibson’s first touchdown proved to be the only score of the first quarter as he found a hole into the endzone from one yard out. Commodore junior Wes Linette tacked on the extra point for the early 7-0 Perry Central advantage.

Linette pushed the Commodore lead to 13 on a 60-yard punt return with 9:31 remaining in the half.

The Pirates would answer when junior quarterback Andrew Smith dove into the endzone from one yard out. Junior Craig Brown tacked on the extra point for Charlestown with 6:30 left to go into the half as Perry Central enjoyed the 13-7 lead.

The score would prove to be the only time the Pirates would find the endzone in the ballgame.

Late in the second stanza Gibson broke free for a five-yard scamper to push the Commodores lead to 12, 19-7 going into the halftime break.

Charlestown received the second half kick-off and drove deep into Perry Central territory. The Pirates found themselves on the Commodore three-yard line before giving up possession of the ball on the Perry Central 10-yard line.

"We’re just not finishing off drives," stated third year head coach Jeff Purichia of his Pirates.

Gibson would make the Pirates pay. The very next play he broke free for a 90-yard touchdown run to push the Commodores lead 25-7. The extra point attempt was blocked by the Charlestown defense.

The Commodores’ final score came on the arm of senior quarterback Coulten Hauser as he hit classmate Derek Gibson in the numbers for a 10-yard touchdown strike. Linette tacked on the extra point for the 32-7 victory for Perry Central.

Purichia was concerned about his team’s consistency after the loss.

Purichia concluded, "We’re just not executing. We are inconsistent on assignments. We’re inconsistent on drives. We give up big plays when we are inconsistent."

The Pirates will host the Pioneers of Providence this Friday night at Dutch Reis Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

During halftime of the contest, the last Sectional Championship team will be honored. The football Pirates of 1996 will be honored for the 10th anniversary of their accomplishment. Former head coach John Mastin will lead the team onto the field for introductions.
