basketball team golf scramble
The Charlestown Pirate boys basketball team will be holding a golf scramble
on Monday, July 9 at Hidden Creek Golf Course in Sellersburg.
There will be a shotgun start beginning at 9 a.m. with lunch served after
golf. Entry fee will be $200 per foursome, with a limit of 144 players. Hole
sponsorship will be $50. The deadline for registration is July 5, after that you
may call Hidden Creek for availability of spots.
Door prizes and contests on the course. All proceeds benefit the Charlestown
High School Pirates basketball team.

Charlestown Senior
Citizen, Inc. moving forward
Charlestown Senior Citizen, Inc.
utilizes the Arts and Enrichment Center, 999 Water Street in Charlestown, as its
home base. Membership meetings are held the first Thursday of each month at 11
a.m. A pitch in lunch follows the meeting. The next meeting is scheduled for
Thursday, July 5.
The Arts and Enrichment Center is open
each Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for activities. While a formal list of
activities is still in the works, cards, corn toss, shuffle board, ping pong and
board games are available each Tuesday.
All interested persons are encouraged
to attend the membership and to participate in the socialization each Tuesday.
If anyone needs a ride for the meetings or on Tuesdays, call Charlestown Senior
Citizen, Inc. at 256-0552 and leave a message. They have volunteers who can
provide transportation.
Participants sought for seventh annual
Charlestown Founders Day 5K run/walk
The 5K Run/Walk will officially start at 8 a.m. while
registration and check-in will begin at 7 a.m. The entry fee is $15 per
participant for advance registrations made on or before June 23 and $20 per
participant for late registration after June 23 to the day of the race.
The run/walk venue will remain the same as prior years; a well marked, and well
maintained cross country course (off the road and in the grass), "where
the deer and the antelope play!" Spectators are invited and encouraged to
attend. Awards will be given to the top male and female finishers in each age
group for the 5K run and the top five walkers. All participants will receive a
commemorative t-shirt and be eligible for door prizes.
This race is made possible thanks to Neace Lukens Insurance and
the Charlestown Beautification Committee. The seventh annual Charlestown
Founders Day will begin on Friday evening, June 29 and conclude on Saturday
evening, June 30 with a dazzling fireworks display!
This annual community celebration will include a festive food court, booths
with arts and crafts, live musical entertainment, contests, games and
activities in the city’s Greenway Park, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament on the
town square (Saturday, June 23) and a spectacular parade.
Last year’s celebration drew well over 10,000 people to the
city park.

18 young ladies to
vie for title of 2007 Miss Clark County
Eighteen young women will be competing for the title of Miss Clark County
this year.
Miss Clark County is the official hostess
of the Clark County 4-H Fair which is July 14-21 and then represents Clark
County in the Indiana State Fair Queen Pageant August 17-19 in Indianapolis.
The competition is based on three levels of
participation: private interview with the judges in the afternoon and the
professional wear and evening gown at the public pageant in the evening.
Katie Herrmann, 2006, Fair Queen will crown
Miss Clark County 2007 on Thursday, June 28 at 7 p.m. The pageant will be held
at Silver Creek High School Auditorium in Sellersburg. The public is invited.
Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for children under 12.
Here are the candidates for the title of
2007 Miss Clark County:
Samantha Nichole Callis, 16, is
the daughter of Mike and Leisa Callis of Charlestown. She is a junior at New
Washington High School and is sponsored by Specialty Manufacturing, Inc.
Her activities and organizations include:
member of the Busy 4-Hers of Nabb, New Hope Community Church Church and Youth
Group, National Honor Society, Student’s Against Destructive Decisions, spell
bowl, choir and drama club. She is also a varsity cheerleader, competition
cheerleader, youth member for the Rose Island Playhouse Board of Directors,
volunteer for Parent Staff Support Group Fall Festival and employed by Penn
Station in New Albany.
Callis’ awards and honors include:
"A" honor roll, nine years of perfect attendance at New Washington
Schools, Greater Clark County Distinguished Academic Award, third place science
fair, and homecoming princess. She also received the most valuable cheerleader
award, first place solo/ensemble piano contest and grand champion in consumer
education clothing for three years. She is the drama club president, church
youth group president and was selected to attend the Midsummer Theatre Camp at
Indiana University.
Her hobbies include reading, exercising,
running, tumbling, competitive cheerleading and swimming. She also loves to act
in school and church plays, and the Rose Island Playhouse. My other hobbies are
playing the piano, reading Shakespeare, spending time with family, friends and
boyfriend, shopping, drawing and writing.
Callis’ goal is to attend the University
of Evansville, study theatre and drama and become a high school drama and
theatre teacher. She also plans to pursue an acting career and would eventually
like to get married and have a family.
Rachel D. Fox, 18, is the
daughter of Dan and Carmen Fox of Charlestown. She is a freshman at Indiana
University Southeast and is sponsored by Zesto of Clark County.
Her activities and organizations include:
Providence girls varsity volleyball and basketball; member of Northside
Christian Church; part time employee of Zesto of Clark County, participated in
numerous instructional clinics for young children teaching fundamentals of
basketball and volleyball, participated in Clark County Farm Bureau Christmas
for Kids, spent time last Christmas at the St. Elizabeth’s Home in New Albany
and completed at least 100 hours of community service at Providence High
School.
Honors include: three time varsity letter
in basketball and volleyball and two time varsity letter in tennis.
Her hobbies include: running, participating
in various sports activities, water activities, she enjoys watching movies with
friends and doing make-up and fixing her girlfriends’ hair.
Her future goals are to receive her
bachelors degree in Business Management at Indiana University Southeast, attend
the Aveda School of Cosmetology in Cincinnati and continue her studies at their
school in Europe, own and operate her own spa and salon.
Alison Coleman, 18, is the
daughter of Sharon and Dean Coleman of Otisco. She is a second semester
freshman at U of L. She graduated mid-term from Henryville High School and is
sponsored by Tallent Lumber.
Her activities and organizations include:
4-H, National Honor Society, FCA, employee at Charlestown Veterinary Clinic,
church youth group, tutor, VBS helper at Memphis Community Church.
Coleman’s honors include: James Holt
Scholarship, Hoosier Girls State Delegate, Parker J. Keeler Award, fourth in
graduating class, Academic Honors Diploma and Ivy Tech essay contest winner.
Her hobbies include: horseback riding,
4-wheeling, swimming, fishing, hiking, running, cooking, bargain shopping and
tending to her animals.
Her future goal is the finish her required
courses for pre-pharmacy and then attend the University of Kentucky’s College
of Pharmacy. Upon graduating she would like to work as a clinical pharmacist in
a hospital.
Stephanie Brison, 18, is the
daughter of Robert and Carole Brison of Marysville. She is a freshman at
Indiana University Southeast and is sponsored by Dale Robinson of State Farm
Insurance.
Activities and Organizations include:
10-year member Clark County 4-H, four year varsity cheerleader (captain 2
years), member of New Hope Community Church and Youth Group, three year member
of FCCLA, New Washington Elementary Assistant Cheer Coach, three years, Youth
Football Cheer Coach, four years, currently a volunteer tumbling teacher at New
Washington High School and employed at Jay C Plus in Charlestown.
Her honors include: 2007 recipient of the
Clark County REMC, the New Washington P.S.S.G. and the Gladys A. Blakenbeker
Memorial scholarships, voted "Most Spirited" senior superlative- NWHS
Class of 2007, Indiana Core 40 Award, 2004 NWHS Snowball Princess, 2005 NWHS
Homecoming Princess.
Hobbies include cheerleading, dancing,
swimming, hanging out with her boyfriend Korey, riding roller coasters,
shopping, fishing and volunteering a large amount of her time teaching
cheerleading to many different ages of girls and boys.
Brison plans on graduating from Indiana
University Southeast in the spring of 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in
Elementary Education. After she graduates she hopes to get married to her
wonderful boyfriend Korey and eventually start a family.
Tiffany Rachelle Baumann, 18, is
the daughter of Robert and Shirley Baumann of Sellersburg. She is a freshman at
Indiana University Southeast and is sponsored by Select Builders.
Her activities and organizations include:
Silver Creek varsity girls golf, Silver Creek varsity cheerleading squad and
competition squad, member of FCA and Sunshine Society and St. Joe Hill Catholic
Church member.
Her honors include Silver Creek 2007
Homecoming queen, 2007 MVP girls golf award, Renaissance Citizenship Award and
2006 all-American Cheerleader and National Cheerleading Champions team member.
Baumann enjoys golfing, boating,
scrapbooking, swimming and volunteering.
She plans to pursue an Elementary Education
major and establish a girls golf program at Indiana University Southeast. And
to one day be Miss Clark County and to also pursue a modeling career.
Carman Ilena Sink, 17, is the
daughter of Keith and Jill Sink of Charlestown. She is a senior at Charlestown
High School and is sponsored by the All-American Livestock 4-H Club.
Activities and organizations include:
attending church at Stony Point Christian Church. She has completed eight years
of 4-H and she is a four year member of the Clark County 4-H Junior Leaders. He
is a blood donor for the American Red Cross and is employed at Rite Aid
Pharmacy in Charlestown.
Honors include: This spring she was
selected to participate in the REMC Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. She has
served as a House Page for State Representative Terry Goodin. She has received
numerous 4-H champions at the county level in foods, foods preservations and
gift wrapping, which have gone on to be displayed at the Indiana State Fair
where she received blue ribbons. Also, she has won baking contest at
Sellersburg Celebrates! and New Albany’s Harvest Homecoming.
She enjoys taking photos and creating
scrapbooks. She likes to sing for the Charlestown High School chorus and enjoys
playing cornhole with her family and friends.
Upon graduating from Charlestown High
School she plans to attend college and begin working towards a degree in
physical therapy.
Caitlin Michelle Wiedemer, 18,
is the daughter of Bill and Teresa Wiedemer of Charlestown. She is a freshman
at Hanover College and is sponsored by Tumble Town.
Activities and organizations include: Clark
County 4-H member, eight years, Charlestown Challengers 4-H Club Vice
President, 4-H Ag Day, Charlestown High School varsity softball catcher, four
years, wrestling manager, four years, varsity football and basketball
cheerleader, four year, student council, four years, concert choir, four years,
concert choir secretary, one year, yearbook, one year, Destination Imagination,
one year, Ohio Valley Thunderstixx Softball Team, Southwest Chapter of American

She has accomplished one goal already,
which was to be accepted to Hanover College, where she will start in the fall
of 2007 majoring in either chemistry or biology, along with playing softball
for the Hanover Panthers. Her long term goals are to complete four years at
Hanover, then enroll in a pre-med program to earn her medical degree
specializing in pediatric medicine. She hopes to open her own medical practice,
get married and start a family.
Amy Popp, 17, is the daughter of
Alvin and Diane Popp of Memphis. She is a junior at Our Lady of Providence High
School and is sponsored by Schuler Bauer Real Estate Service- Popp Realty
Group.
Activities and organizations: SADD
(Students Against Destructive Decisions), Providence PRIDE (Providing
Recognition for Involvement, Dedication and Excellence), Lector Ministry, two
year captain of the Providence dance team and student council.
Honors include: honor roll, second place in
the 2007 Clark County Rotary Speech Contest, selected to attend HOBY (Hugh O’Brien
Youth) Indiana Leadership Conference, received the 2007 Our Lady of Providence
High Speech and English Award and was 2006 runner up Miss Clark County.
Her hobbies include reading, dancing,
music, scrap booking and spending time with her family.
Popp’s future goal is to attend Purdue
University and major in advertising and marketing. She wants to become actively
involved as a leader in her community.
Emilee Ann Carver, 17, is the
daughter of Ron and Sandy Carver of Sellersburg. She is a junior at Silver
Creek High School and is sponsored by Welby Edwards State Farm.
Activities and organizations include: The
International Thespian Society, 4-H Dog Club, Silver Starz Dance team, First
Baptist Church, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Hanagans Broadway
Performers.
Honors include: Academic Honors at Silver
Creek High School, Dance Team- Best Facials and Best All Around and National
Physical Fitness Award.
Carver enjoys singing, dancing and acting
and also enjoys tutoring academics and music.
She plans to attend Indiana University
Southeast and complete a bachelors degree in Business and a Masters in
Marketing. She hopes someday to use these skills in a family owned business in
Clark County.
Jenah Dee Overbey, 20, of
Henryville, is the daughter of Robin Overbey and Michelle Mull. She is a
graduate of PJ’s College of Cosmetology and is sponsored by R.D. Pyke Funeral
Home.
Activities and organizations include: Phi
Sigma Sigman Sorority, Hoosiers for Higher Education, West Athens Percussion
Ensemble, National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Henryville
High School Marching Band and Winter Guard Staff Member, Floyd County Youth
Shelter, National Kidney Foundation and the American Cancer Biorepository.
Her honors include: Loss Prevention
Officers, Phi Sigma Sigma officer, Phi Sigma Sigma committee head, drum major

Overbey’s hobbies include cutting and
styling hair, watching scary movies, bargain shopping, learning new instruments
and playing video games and computer games.
Her goal is to obtain a cosmetology license
and be working as a stylist in a salon by August of 2007. After reaching her
goal, she plans on earning a business degree at Indiana University Southeast.

daughter of Paula Forehand of Henryville. She is a senior at Henryville Jr. Sr.
High School and is sponsored by Gap Fabrication Inc.

Band to a successful marching season, to graduate from high school with honors,
then complete her masters degree in Secondary Education. She would like to use
her education to obtain a high school teaching position in Southern Indiana and
would also like to marry and spend their honeymoon backpacking through Europe.
Then complete their family with two or three children.
Stacy Carroll, 19, is the
daughter of Bruce and Debby Carroll of Nabb. She is a sophomore at Western
Kentucky University and is sponsored by The New Washington State Bank.
Activities and organizations include:
Western Kentucky University’s block and Bridle Organization, National Honor
Society of Collegiate Scholars, Western Kentucky University’s Collegiate 4-H,
National Junior Swine Association and Trinity United Presbyterian Church.
Her honors include: Presidential Scholar at
WKU, AT& T Foundation Scholarship, Indiana Academic Honors Diploma, 2006,
Indiana 4-H Foundation Scholarship, four varsity letters in softball, 10 year
member of Clark County 4-H, Miss Clark County first runner-up, 2005 and 2006,
Service Leader for Senator Evan Bayh, 2005, Purdue University’s Junior
Scholar Award, 2005, Indiana FFA District XI Swine Production Entrepreneurship
winner, 2004 and 2005, "Top Individual" in livestock evaluation at

Hobbies include spending tie with family

After graduating from Western Kentucky
University she plans to start her career as an extension agent for Indiana 4-H
or as a teacher for a local school and educate children about the science of
agriculture. She hopes also to eventually fulfill her lifelong goal of owning
her own farm or livestock operation.
Whitney Christine Graf, 18, is
the daughter of Mike and Stacy Graf of Underwood. She is sponsored by Datum
Inc.
Her activities and organizations include:
playing varsity basketball and softball for three years, cheerleader for four
years and ran one year of track. She served in the National Honor Society for
two years and was a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes for three years.
She is a 10-year 4-H member.
Her honors include 4-H tenure award, Girls
State Senator, Girls State Judge, Project XL first round winner and first
runner up in the state fashion revue.
She enjoys running, cooking, swimming,
shopping, scrapbooking, drawing and sewing.
Graf plans on attending Savannah College of
Art and Design and becoming a jewelry and fashion designer.
Whitney Noel Popp, 16, is the
daughter of Ralph and Patty Popp of Memphis. She is a junior at Our Lady of
Providence High School and is sponsored by Schuler Bauer Real Estate
Services-Popp Realty Group.

Providence Dance Team captain, member two years, math team, Saint Genesius
Society, Providence PRIDE, member two years, Freshman Class Student Council

the victims’ families.

She hopes to become a member of the

Musical, graduate with honors at the top of her class, get a full ride to
college and establish a successful career for her future.
Kristin N. Kemp, 17, is the
daughter of Barbara Popp Kemp of New Albany. She is a senior at Providence High
School and is sponsored by Schuler Bauer Real Estate Services- Popp Realty

Sarah Montgomery, 17, is the
daughter of Charlene Montgomery of Jeffersonville. She is a senior at
Jeffersonville High School and is sponsored by Raymond T. Justice Foot &
Ankle Specialist.
She is a volunteer at the Red Cross chapter
of Clark County.
Her honors include ACORN award reception,
Red Cross Chapter of Clark County Youth Volunteer of the Year.
Her goal is to become an elementary school
teacher and to leave this world a little better than when she came into it.
Nikki Staples, 18, is the
daughter of Jack and Sally Staples of Henryville. She is a freshman at Ball
State University and is sponsored by Furnish Contracting.
Her activities include: Silver Creek
varsity softball player, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Sunshine Society
member, World Language and Science Club member and St. Francis Xavier Catholic
Church member.
Honors include Silver Creek Renaissance
Citizenship Award winner, 2006-2007 Yearbook Editor, Prosecuting Teen Court
Attorney and homecoming court.
Her hobbies are softball, photography,
reading, swimming, working out, traveling and fishing.
She plans to attend Ball State University
and earn a degree in communications. She would like to become a journalist/news
reporter and travel to different countries.
Kelsey Delane Abbott, 17, is the
daughter of Ken and Leila Abbott. She is a freshman at Indiana University
Southeast and is sponsored by Charlestown Monument Company.
Activities and organizations include: Clark
County Tunnel Mill Tigers 4-H Club, president, Entertainment for Charlestown
Founder’s Day 2006 and 2007. Light Up Charlestown 2006, Charlestown
Beautification Luncheon 2006, Autumn on the River 2006, Miss Clark County
Pageant 2006, Relay for Life 2007, Ross Country Jamboree, Corydon Jamboree,
Lincoln Jamboree, Shepherdsville Country Music Show, Signs at Red’s on the

singer, earn a bachelor’s degree in either business, nutrition, education or
medical research, possibly open her own business and eventually get married and
have children.
