The school year is coming to an end. Most students are
counting down the days until they are free from the classroom school campus for
the entire summer.
Some have already made plans on what
to do on their vacation and places to visit. Others have made plans on what
they want to do next school year including a first opportunity for students.
Students at Silver Creek Middle School
have an opportunity that has not been available to them in years past. An
opportunity that will fill their summer with hard work on the football
gridiron. They have the chance to lace up their cleats and strap on their
helmets as they prepare for the first season of Silver Creek Middle School
football.
Interested students in the seventh and
eighth grade at Silver Creek Middle School are encouraged to attend the
upcoming mini camp to be held this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 18-20.
Mike Flores was recently hired as the
new Silver Creek Middle School head football coach. He was a member of the 1991
University of Louisville football team who defeated the Crimson Tide of Alabama
for the Fiesta Bowl Championship. After graduating from the University of
Louisville and playing football from 1986 to 1991 he was drafted by the
Philadelphia Eagles. Flores played defensive end for the Eagles from 1991 to
1995.
Flores and his assistant coaches will
conduct the mini camp. The camp schedule will include: Friday- 3 to 5 p.m.
registration and practice from 5 to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.
to 12 noon and 2 to 4 p.m. Lunch will be provided on Saturday and Sunday. The
campers will be taken into the cafeteria where they will enjoy lunch and a
break between sessions.
The registration will be at the Silver
Creek field. During the registration players will also be fitted for helmets.
"This mini camp is for seventh
and eighth grade Silver Creek football players only," Flores stated.
"It’s basically for assessments of talent."
The camp, according to Flores, will
concentrate on fundamentals and learning.
"It will be fun. It’ll be
drills, skills and learning," Flores added.
Flores is ready to get to the task at
hand and is very excited about the opportunity.
"I am mainly excited about the
opportunity to start something. The Sellersburg community seems to be excited
about the opportunity for the kids to play football. To me, it’s more about
being a role model than the x’s and o’s," Flores added.
Flores is also excited about the group
of coaches that will accompany him on the sidelines. His volunteer assistant
coaches will be Kevin Brooks, Chris Costin and Donnie Ross.
"I am excited about the group of
assistant coaches and I am going to let them do their job," Flores stated.
The mini camp is only the beginning of
the training and conditioning for the newly established Silver Creek Middle
School football program. According to Flores a training camp will begin in
mid-June.
"A series of three practices a
week leading up to August will begin probably in the middle of June,"
Flores added.
The upcoming training camp dates and
times will be published at a later date in The Leader.
For more information about the mini
camp or training camp please contact Rhonda Grangier, Silver Creek Middle
School Athletic Director at 246-4421 or Mike Flores, football head coach at
Silver Creek Middle School at 295-1128.
The team is also looking for more
volunteer coaches and other volunteer positions. For more information or to
volunteer for a position with the team please contact Grangier at 246-4421.
