Local school bus drivers looking
for community support for meeting

    School bus drivers with the Greater Clark County Schools are coming together to attend an upcoming meeting in regards to their current jobs as bus drivers.
   
The meeting is set for Tuesday, May 1 at 5:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Greater Clark County Administration Building located at 2112 Utica Sellersburg Road in Jeffersonville.
   
The bus drivers encourage all concerned parents and citizens to attend the meeting to voice their concerns about the possibility of the contract going to an outside firm. The new bus drivers could begin transporting children in the local area in the 2007/2008 school year.
   
The bus drivers who currently drive for all New Washington, Charlestown and Jeffersonville schools will possibly be effected by the change.


Charlestown’s Arbor Day celebration
to be held Saturday on city square

     The Charlestown Community Forestry Board (CCFB) and the City of Charlestown will be hosting its first Arbor Day celebration this Saturday at 11 a.m. on the city square.
    The guest speakers will be Don Stump, Clark County Forster and Eric Sampson with Duke Energy Transmission and Distribution, ISA Certified Arborist.
    The winners of the "Color Your Favorite Tree" contest will be announced.
    Charlestown Mayor Mike Hall will make an Arbor Dy proclamation. Mayor Hall and the CCFB will plant a new tree on the square.
    Charlestown will be applying for "Tree City USA" in 2008.
    The City of Charlestown and the CCFB will be working on a Tree Ordinance after Arbor Day. Once the Tree ordinance is passed by the Charlestown City Council, the CCFB may start the application process for Tree City USA status. Tree City USA status will give the city up to $20,000 yearly in matching grants for tree planting, education, Arbor Day and tree care by the CCFB.

Charlestown State Park hosts
"Between the Wars: 1760's encampment"

    The public is cordially invited to live "Between the Wars" and explore the conflicts between the Natives and white settlers that arose with onset of white settlement into the frontier in the decade after the French & Indian War and before the American Revolution. They will be including trade scenarios to illustrate how both sides interacted in the beginning of the period, as well as several scenarios showing the decay in relations, and a night-time woods walk.
    The fees are $5 per car for Indiana residents, $7 per car for out-of-state residents, or free for entrance permits holders. For more information call the park office at 256-5600.
    The park is located on Highway 62 in Charlestown.

Saturday, May 12
   
Enjoy walking through the reenactor’s camps to get a glimpse of how life was like in the 1760's all day.
    9 a.m.- Opening ceremony. Here you have the opportunity to learn about the history behind the event and ask questions. Meet at Oak Shelter.
    10 a.m.- Trade scenario- Meet at Oak Shelter to witness an exchange between the Natives and the settlers. Interactions between these two groups of individuals happened frequently on the frontier setting.
    Noon- Woods walk- Journey with early settlers along a woodland path, but be careful, your party may be attacked. Meet at Oak Shelter.
    4 p.m.- Raid- Strain between the Natives and settlers have escalated and when the settlers claim the land for their own, it is too much! Meet at the camps near Oak Shelter.
    8:45 p.m.- Night Woods Walk- Limited numbers only! This nighttime woods walk, is a unique chance to see what a night attack would have been like for early settlers. Pre-registration is mandatory, sign up at the Campground Gatehouse.
Sunday, May 13
   
The camps still need exploration! Come and visit before the Natives pack up and move on to another camping site.
    10 a.m.- Trade scenario- Meet at Oak Shelter to witness an exchange between the Natives and the settlers. Interactions between these two groups of individuals happened frequently on the frontier setting.
    11 a.m.- Double ball game- A traditional Native game usually played by women is an active game involving two teams and goals. Meet at the Oak Shelter to enjoy the game or participate!
    Noon- Woods Walk or Raid- Journey with early settlers along a woodland path, but be careful, your party by be attacked! Meet at Oak Shelter.


First Arbor Day Celebration
to be held in Charlestown April 28

    On April 28 at 11 a.m. Charlestown will have its first Arbor Day Celebration on the square.
   Charlestown children grades kindergarten through fifth may enter the color your favorite tree contest. Forms went out to Jonathan Jennings, Pleasant Ridge and St. Michael’s recently. You may also pick up the forms at Jay C Food Store or The New Washington State Bank.
   The Arbor Day Celebration will have tree plantings, Arbor Day Proclamation, refreshments from Jay C Food Store and the winners of the color you favorite tree will be announced.
   First prize is $50, Second prize is $30 and Third prize is $10. Fourth through Eighth place will receive a free medium Domino’s pizza. Every child that enters will receive a free Cinna-Stix coupon from Domino’s. The winners will also have their picture printed in an upcoming issue of The Leader.
  
The Arbor Day Celebration, the Arbor Day Proclamation and the forestry board are all requirements to become a Tree City U.S.A. The city will apply for Tree City U.S.A. in December. This will give Charlestown the ability to apply for up to $20,000 in grant for tree care, planting and education.
   All citizens are encouraged to view the color sheets at Charlestown City Hall from April now through April 30, during normal business hours.
   The group will also have a representative from the Charlestown State Park, trees from McCoy’s Landscaping and the Master Gardeners from Charlestown.
   The Arbor Day Celebration is presented by the City of Charlestown and the Charlestown Community Forestry Board. The event is being sponsored by Charlestown Domino’s, The New Washington State Bank, Jay C Food Store, McCoy’s Landscaping and The Leader.
