Clark County Relay 
For Life Planning Committee
to host roadblock this Saturday

    The Clark County Relay For Life Planning Committee will be hosting a fundraiser this Saturday.
    The group will hold a roadblock at the intersection of Highway 311 and Highway 31 in Sellersburg. The event will be held form 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    Margie Fetter, co-chair of the Clark County Relay For Life, was excited about the fundraiser.
    "This is a great opportunity for us to raise some money for cancer research and bring awareness to the local community of our great Clark County Relay For Life event," Fetter stated.
    She continued, "I just want to thank everyone in advance for their donations. I hope we have great weather for the roadblock."
    The Clark County Relay For Life will be held May 11 and 12 at Jeffersonville High School.


Senior Citizen Center
in Charlestown becomes a reality

  The Steering Committee will hold a meeting to provide feed back on the Senior Citizen Survey results. The meeting will be held at The Arts and Enrichment Center located at 999 Water Street on April 19 at 10 a.m. The research and analyze model for starting the Senior Center and best practices of programs and serves for an aging population in this area.
    The City of Charlestown is committed to working with the Charlestown Senior Citizen, Inc., to develop activities and programs to enhance seniors enjoyment of living in the community. Activities are being planned and coordinate for education, fitness, volunteering, social events, you name it. If they don’t have what you are looking for, they will listen to your ideas.
   
Seniors are encouraged to participate in the development and operation of Charlestown Senior Citizen, Inc. The election of a five member Board of Directors will be conducted at this meeting.
   
Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend on April 19 and vote for the board of directors.

Local police officer arrested by ISP

    On Wednesday, April 4, at approximately 9 p.m., undercover troopers, uniform troopers and several officers from other agencies performed a buy/bust of 30 extended release morphine pills from Franklin E. Mike, 34, of Sellersburg. Mikel is a police officer with the Clarksville Police Department.
    Approximately one month ago troopers from the Indiana State Police were informed of Mikel allegedly dealing in controlled substances. Undercover troopers began an investigation that led up to the April 4 purchase of 30 extended release morphine pills from Mikel. The buy/bust was performed at Greentree Skateland skating rink in Clarksville.
    Mikel was not on duty as a police officer and was not driving his police car at the time of his arrest.
   
The arrest was made without incident and Mikel was incarcerated in the Clark County Jail on three counts of Dealing in a Schedule II Controlled Substance, A Felony. One handgun was seized from Mikel during the bust.
    Assisting agencies included: Floyd County Sheriff’s Department, Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, Jeffersonville City Police Department and Southern Indiana Drug Task Force.


First Arbor Day Celebration
to be held in Charlestown April 28

    On April 28 at 11 a.m. Charlestown will have its first Arbor Day Celebration on the square.
   Charlestown children grades kindergarten through fifth may enter the color your favorite tree contest. Forms went out to Jonathan Jennings, Pleasant Ridge and St. Michael’s recently. You may also pick up the forms at Jay C Food Store or The New Washington State Bank.
   The Arbor Day Celebration will have tree plantings, Arbor Day Proclamation, refreshments from Jay C Food Store and the winners of the color you favorite tree will be announced.
   First prize is $50, Second prize is $30 and Third prize is $10. Fourth through Eighth place will receive a free medium Domino’s pizza. Every child that enters will receive a free Cinna-Stix coupon from Domino’s. The winners will also have their picture printed in an upcoming issue of The Leader.
  
The Arbor Day Celebration, the Arbor Day Proclamation and the forestry board are all requirements to become a Tree City U.S.A. The city will apply for Tree City U.S.A. in December. This will give Charlestown the ability to apply for up to $20,000 in grant for tree care, planting and education.
   All citizens are encouraged to view the color sheets at Charlestown City Hall from April now through April 30, during normal business hours.
   The group will also have a representative from the Charlestown State Park, trees from McCoy’s Landscaping and the Master Gardeners from Charlestown.
   The Arbor Day Celebration is presented by the City of Charlestown and the Charlestown Community Forestry Board. The event is being sponsored by Charlestown Domino’s, The New Washington State Bank, Jay C Food Store, McCoy’s Landscaping and The Leader.
