Charlestown teen dies after
being hit while skateboarding

An off-duty Charlestown Police Sergeant drove upon an accident early Wednesday evening around 6:30 p.m.
Sgt. Devin Bizer was traveling near Charlestown High School when he noticed what he believed to be a pedestrian- vehicle accident, according to Major Chuck Ledbetter, Assistant Chief of the Charlestown Police Department.
"He rode up on what he believed to be a pedestrian-vehicle accident at the south parking lot entrance to the high school, off Park Street," Ledbetter explained the accident site.
After learning more information about what happened Bizer called for first responders and on-duty personnel.
The investigation revealed that Justin Aaron Alvey Combs, 19, of Charlestown had been skateboarding eastbound on the Park Street sidewalk bordering Charlestown High School in front of the football field.
"We believe Combs was performing a trick and lost control," Ledbetter stated. "He fell in front of a large 4x4 truck exiting the parking lot."
Ledbetter continued, "He hit the front passenger side of the truck and rolled under the passenger tire before the truck stopped."
The accident caused major internal injuries to Combs’ torso.
StatCare was called to transport Combs to University of Louisville Hospital. StatCare landed on the football field.
Combs was pronounced dead at University of Louisville Hospital.
"The massive injuries was the cause of his death," Ledbetter added.
The driver of the truck was a 17-year old minor.
"At this point we don’t expect to file any charges (against the driver). He was meeting with friends at the school," Ledbetter said. Last week students at Greater Clark County Schools, including Charlestown High School, were off for Spring Break.
According to Ledbetter the case is still under investigation as the police await the results of toxicology and other reports. He said he expects the results in about two weeks.
Combs, a native of Newport Richey, Florida, is survived by his mother, Loretta Combs of Louisville; his father, Johnny Combs of Charlestown; a son, Nicholas J. Combs of Louisville; three brothers, Jeremy Combs of Texas, Johnny L. Combs of Charlestown and Josh Burkhead of Charlestown; two sisters, April Combs of Charlestown and Joni Allen of Charlestown and grandparents Ollie Combs of Charlestown and Merle and Loretta Johnson of Fredericksburg, Indiana.
