Question and answer seminar
with a physician regarding
Cervical Cancer Vaccine

Clark Memorial Hospital will present a free seminar with Dr. Arlene Kraut, board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, regarding the newly approved Cervical Cancer Vaccination. The free seminar is Thursday, March 22 at 6:30 p.m. at Clark Memorial Hospital.
The Cervical Cancer Vaccine was developed to prevent HPV or Human Papillomavirus, a common virus that is a risk factor for cervical cancer. In 2005, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that 20 million people in the United States has this virus. There are many different types of HPV; some cause no harm. Others can cause diseases of the genital area. For most people, the virus goes away on its own. When the virus does not go away it can develop into cervical cancer, precancerious lesions, or genital warts, depending on the HPV type. There is now a vaccine to prevent cervical cancer caused by HPV.
For women who have questions about the vaccine for themselves or their daughters, there is a free seminar with Dr. Kraut, obstetrician and gynecologist. Dr. Kraut will explain the positives and negatives of the vaccination, as well as answer questions.
The program will be in the lower level conference center at Clark Memorial Hospital. To register please call 283-2079.

Eighth grade boys finish
third in River City Shootout

The Charlestown eighth grade Elite AAU boys basketball team recently had their own March Madness when they participated recently in the River City Shootout Basketball Tournament with games being held at Madison Junior High School and E.O. Muncie in Madison.

The tournament consisted of 12 teams from Clark, Jackson, Jefferson, Jennings, Johnson, Martin, Ripley and Scott counties.

With pool play on Friday and Saturday, Charlestown finished with a record of 1-1 against Batesville and South Ripley. After the final seedings for the four pools were set, the Sunday tournament got off to an early start with Charlestown taking a win against Madison-Shawe.

Waiting next after getting a bye, was Madison. With lead changes going back and forth during the entire game, Charlestown clamped down on defense and held on for a four point win to advance to the Final Four for, which seems like a long series of meetings, against cross county rival, Scottsburg.

Charlestown began the game with a slight lead , but with Scottsburg using their height advantage and depth on the bench, took back the lead and started to pull away. Charlestown would not give up and fought back, but in the end Scottsburg would advance to the championship game. Charlestown finished the tournament in a tie for third place with a record of 3-2.

Members of the team included Alex Shepherd, Jake Atkins, Steven Coyne, Josh King, Kyle Hayes, Buddy Harper, Anthony Lloyd, Alonte Weathers, Brad O’Leary and Devan Thorstadt. The coach is Shawn Smith.
