to host senior night, "Fill
Up the Gym Night" this Friday

    The Charlestown High School Basketball Pirates will play at home this Friday night against Floyd Central.
    This will be Senior Night for the six senior Pirates who will be playing in their last game at Bill Dunn Sports Arena. The Pirate seniors are Jordan Copeland, Clayton Merschbrock, Chris Chastain, Stephen Grayson, Zach Merschbrock and Bowman Thrasher.
    This game will also be "Fill Up the Gym Night." The Pirate Pride Booster Club encourages all fans to come out and support the seniors in their final home game and the team as they get pumped up for Sectional play.
    The Pirates will begin Sectional 30 play at North Harrison on Tuesday, February 26. Charlestown will be pitted against Mid Southern Conference rival Salem in the opening round of Sectional play.


IHSAA holds Sectional draw

    Officials with the Indiana High School Athletic Association held the Sectional tournament draw on Sunday evening, February 17. The upcoming tournament will be the 98th Annual State Tournament Series.
    In the Class 3A Sectional 30, Silver Creek and Charlestown will travel to Ramsey as North Harrison will be this year’s host.
    The seven-team Sectional will host one game on Tuesday night, February 26, and two games on Wednesday night, February 27, for the Round 1 action. The semi-finals will be held on Friday night, February 29 with two games being held. The championship game will be held on Saturday, March 1.
    The opening game will pit Mid Southern Conference foes Salem and Charlestown. This will be a highly anticipated game as the teams met last Friday night at Salem. Charlestown took the 61-50 win to clinch a share of the Mid Southern Conference title. The title is the first one for the Pirates since 1990.
    Game 2 will feature Mitchell and Silver Creek while game 3 will feature Corydon Central and the home-standing Cougars of North Harrison.
    The Wolfpack of Crawford County received the bye and will face the winner of Game 1 (Salem vs Charlestown) in Game 4.
    The winners of Games 2 and 3 will face off in Game 5 as the winners of Games 4 and 5 will face off in the championship round.
    The admission to the Sectional will be $5 per session or $9 for all sessions.
    The winner of Sectional 30 will travel to Washington for Regional play. The Washington Regional will be held on Saturday, March 8 and will feature the winners of the Edgewood, Washington, Boonville and North Harrison Sectionals.
    The admission to the Regional will be $6 per session or $9 for both the morning and evening session.
    The Semi-State will be held in either Southport or Seymour. The IHSAA will make that decision once the Regional winners are determined. Semi-State action will be held on Saturday, March 15. Admission will be $7.
    The Finals will be held on March 22 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The admission will be $10 per session or $18 for all sessions.
    Rock Creek Christian and New Washington will travel to Borden for the Class A Sectional 62 competition.
    The Lions and Mustangs are also in a seven-team Sectional. First round games will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 26 and 27. Game one will be held on Tuesday with games two and three being played on Wednesday. The Semi-final games will be held on Friday, February 29 with the champion being crowned on Saturday, March 1.
    The opening game will feature the Mustangs of New Washington and the Rebels of South Central on Tuesday night. Game 2 will feature the Christian Academy Warriors and the Eagles of Lanesville, which will be the opening game on Wednesday followed by the nightcap featuring the host Braves of Borden and Henryville Hornets.
    The Lions of Rock Creek Christian received the bye and will play in the opening game on Friday night. The Lions will face the winner of game one (New Washington and South Central). The winners of games 2 and 3 will face off in the nightcap on Friday.
    The champion of Sectional 62 will be crowned on Saturday, March 1 as the winners of games four and five are pitted against each other for the right to cut down the nets.
    The admission price for Sectional 62 is $5 per session or $9 for all sessions.
    The winner of Sectional 62 will travel to North Daviess in Elnora for Regional play. Other Sectional winners in the Regional will include: Springs Valley, Loogootee and Wood Memorial Sectional winners. The Regional will be played on Saturday, March 8.
    The admission price for the Regional is $6 per session or $9 for both sessions.
    The winner of the North Daviess Regional will be heading to either Seymour or Southport for Semi-State action. The IHSAA will make that determination once the Regional winners become available. The admission will be $7.
    The State Championship will be held on Saturday, March 22 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The admission will be $10 per session or $18 for all sessions.

heartbreaker, Henryville 
ends Lady Braves’ season

    The second round of the Henryville Class A Sectional 62 gave the fans everything they hoped for and much, much more.
    The ever-building rivalry of the Lady Mustangs of New Washington and the Lady Rebels of South Central was evident as fans poured into Furnish Gymnasium early to get the best seat. Fans were showing their school spirit dressed in crazy costumes with lots of face paint being used as they tried to will their team to victory.
    The opening game was one that many high school girls basketball fans were waiting patiently for, New Washington and South Central. The teams did not disappoint as the Lady Rebels fought from a 13point deficient, 39-26, in the fourth quarter to pull out the 59-51 victory.
    The second game pitted Southern Athletic Conference rivals Borden and Henryville. Borden and Henryville played tight in the early stages of the ballgame before the Lady Hornets took the 63-51 win.

Lady Mustang senior Jillian Charlet began the scoring at the 7:30 mark on a lay up.
    South Central’s Kristin Schaffer nailed a jumper at the 3:54 mark to knot the game at a bucket. Teammate Brittany Schoen drained a triple at the 1:57 mark followed by a jumper to push the South Central lead 7-4 with 36 seconds remaining in the quarter.
    Charlet hit one from the free throw line to close out the scoring in the quarter. New Washington trailed by a bucket, 7-5, heading into the second quarter.
    The Lady Mustangs outscored South Central 21-9 in the second stanza as Casey Johnson nailed two treys and Charlet recorded six points in the stanza.
    New Washington held the double-digit lead, 26-16, heading into the halftime break.
    New Washington’s Johnson drained two more from behind the arc in the third quarter. Junior Jenna Sexton added a triple of her own in the stanza. The Lady Mustangs outscored the Lady Rebels 13-10 in the period as they held the 39-26 advantage heading into the final quarter.
    South Central’s Schoen saw the possibility of her high school career coming to an end and took control of the quarter. She tallied the first six points for the Lady Rebels in the quarter to pull them within seven, 41-34.
    New Washington pushed the lead to 10 as Charlet answered with the next six points for the Lady Mustangs.
    Lady Rebel freshman Shelby Miller and her cousin, Schoen, nailed back-to-back threes with just under four minutes to play in the ballgame.
    The buckets sparked a 17-1 run to seal the Lady Rebel victory. During the run Miller calmly nailed 7-of-8 from the free throw line before Schoen nailed the last four free throws to seal the victory.
    The Lady Mustangs fell in a heartbreaker, 59-51, as South Central advanced to the championship game.
    "We got out of rhythm. We dictated the tempo up until the last quarter and then we got caught up in the tempo," New Washington head coach Terry White stated.
    Three seniors played their last game in a New Washington uniform including Alyssa Burch, Nicole Walker and Jillian Charlet. The Lady Mustang fourth senior, Kaelin Tuell, watched from the Lady Mustang bench as she hurt her knee in practice on Tuesday afternoon.
    "Our four seniors take on a different role now but they are still and will always be a member of our family," White concluded.
Henryville- 63

Henryville jumped out with a 10-4 run as Katie Spellman tallied five of the first 10 points.
    Borden’s Maria Kirchgessner and Bethany Burrier scored the next four points for the Lady Braves before Henryville’s Erin Mohler nailed a trey to push the Lady Hornet lead, 15-9, heading into the second stanza.
    Borden’s Jessye Pearson recorded Borden’s first eight points in the quarter pulling the Lady Braves within five, 22-17, with 5:12 remaining in the half.
    Henryville’s Erica Runyon recorded four of the next nine points to extend the Lady Hornet lead, 31-17.
    Kirchgessner added the next three points for the Lady Braves before both teams traded free throws the remainder of the half.
    Henryville held the 33-22 halftime lead.
    Lady Hornet senior Erin Mohler added eight of Henryville’s 14 points in the third quarter as Borden’s Pearson and Kirchgessner tallied 12 of the Lady Braves’ 16 points in the quarter. Borden pulled within seven, 47-40, heading into the final eight minutes.
    Henryville nailed 9-of-12 free throws down the stretch to advance to the championship game.
    The Lady Hornets took the 63-51 victory over conference rival Borden.
    "I feel very fortunate to just get out of there with a win," stated Henryville head coach Brian Guernsey after the ballgame. "Abby Taylor played great. She had six assists and six rebounds."
    The Lady Braves had three seniors play in their last ballgame including Chelsea Blalock, Shelbi Bishop and Maria Kirchgessner.

Department announces
"Seussical! Character breakfast

     Silver Creek High School Theatre Department announces a "Seussical!" Character Breakfast to take place on Saturday, March 1. The breakfast will be held in the Silver Creek Elementary School Cafeteria and is presented to coincide with Dr. Seuss’ birthday.
   "Seussical, the Musical!" is being presented at Silver Creek High School on February 22, 23, 28, 29 and March 1 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, February 24 at 2:30 p.m.
   The character breakfast will feature the cast of the musical in full costume, mingling with the participants, having their pictures taken with the children and actually reading Dr. Suess stories to them. There will be two seatings, one at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Reservations are required. The cost is $5. Reservations can be made by calling at 502-291-2722 and must be received by Friday, February 29. No walk-ins please.
   The menu will consist of "Seussage and Biscuits" or Grinch Toast Sticks with syrup. Also offered with be Truffula Tree Juice and Apple-Seuss. All the favorite Suess characters will be there, The Cat in the Hat, Horton, Mayzie, Gertrude, McFuzz, Yertle the Turtle, The Wickersham Brothers, General Ghenghis Khan Schmitz, the Sour Kangaroo, The Grinch and all the Who’s form Whoville.
