The second round of the Henryville Class A Sectional 62
gave the fans everything they hoped for and much, much more.
The ever-building rivalry of the Lady
Mustangs of New Washington and the Lady Rebels of South Central was evident as
fans poured into Furnish Gymnasium early to get the best seat. Fans were
showing their school spirit dressed in crazy costumes with lots of face paint
being used as they tried to will their team to victory.
The opening game was one that many
high school girls basketball fans were waiting patiently for, New Washington
and South Central. The teams did not disappoint as the Lady Rebels fought from
a 13point deficient, 39-26, in the fourth quarter to pull out the 59-51
victory.
The second game pitted Southern
Athletic Conference rivals Borden and Henryville. Borden and Henryville played
tight in the early stages of the ballgame before the Lady Hornets took the
63-51 win.
South Central- 59
New Washington- 51
Lady Mustang senior Jillian
Charlet began the scoring at the 7:30 mark on a lay up.
South Central’s Kristin Schaffer
nailed a jumper at the 3:54 mark to knot the game at a bucket. Teammate
Brittany Schoen drained a triple at the 1:57 mark followed by a jumper to push
the South Central lead 7-4 with 36 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Charlet hit one from the free throw
line to close out the scoring in the quarter. New Washington trailed by a
bucket, 7-5, heading into the second quarter.
The Lady Mustangs outscored South
Central 21-9 in the second stanza as Casey Johnson nailed two treys and
Charlet recorded six points in the stanza.
New Washington held the double-digit
lead, 26-16, heading into the halftime break.
New Washington’s Johnson drained
two more from behind the arc in the third quarter. Junior Jenna Sexton added a
triple of her own in the stanza. The Lady Mustangs outscored the Lady Rebels
13-10 in the period as they held the 39-26 advantage heading into the final
quarter.
South Central’s Schoen saw the
possibility of her high school career coming to an end and took control of the
quarter. She tallied the first six points for the Lady Rebels in the quarter
to pull them within seven, 41-34.
New Washington pushed the lead to 10
as Charlet answered with the next six points for the Lady Mustangs.
Lady Rebel freshman Shelby Miller and
her cousin, Schoen, nailed back-to-back threes with just under four minutes to
play in the ballgame.
The buckets sparked a 17-1 run to
seal the Lady Rebel victory. During the run Miller calmly nailed 7-of-8 from
the free throw line before Schoen nailed the last four free throws to seal the
victory.
The Lady Mustangs fell in a
heartbreaker, 59-51, as South Central advanced to the championship game.
"We got out of rhythm. We
dictated the tempo up until the last quarter and then we got caught up in the
tempo," New Washington head coach Terry White stated.
Three seniors played their last game
in a New Washington uniform including Alyssa Burch, Nicole Walker and Jillian
Charlet. The Lady Mustang fourth senior, Kaelin Tuell, watched from the Lady
Mustang bench as she hurt her knee in practice on Tuesday afternoon.
"Our four seniors take on a
different role now but they are still and will always be a member of our
family," White concluded.
Henryville- 63
Borden- 51
Henryville jumped out with a 10-4
run as Katie Spellman tallied five of the first 10 points.

points for the Lady Braves before both teams traded free throws the remainder
of the half.

lead.

eight of Henryville’s 14 points in the third quarter as Borden’s Pearson
and Kirchgessner tallied 12 of the Lady Braves’ 16 points in the quarter.

Henryville nailed 9-of-12 free throws
down the stretch to advance to the championship game.
The Lady Hornets took the 63-51
victory over conference rival Borden.
"I feel very fortunate to just
get out of there with a win," stated Henryville head coach Brian Guernsey
