The Washington County Farmers’ Market received it’s first official entry into the 2012  “Largest Tomato” contest co-sponsored by- “Good Earth Master Gardeners of Washington County” & Washington County Farmers’ Market and even though, it is not believed that this record tomato of just over one pound will win the final ‘record’ tomato pay-off of $20.00 per pound for the “Biggest Tomato in Indiana; the grower did receive a “Big Tomato” certificate and a $5.00 Record Setting Market Buck. Pick-up official rules and entry at the market and check out the “Tally board”.
There were twelve farmers/gardeners at last Saturday’s market with a very good supply of quality produce. Selling was “vigorous” at the 8:30 starting time and continued, “steady,” tell after12:00 pm. Vine ripened tomatoes might have been the headliners, but green beans, greens, cabbage, Swiss chard, zucchini, yellow crooknecks, potatoes (both red & white), peppers of all kinds, cucumbers, cauliflower, beets, and some of the prettiest broccoli you have ever seen, all added to the show.  Put in the extras jumbo brown eggs, specialty Jams, meats and four vendors with scrumptious baked goods and you defiantly have a winner!
One young daughter of a vendor was over heard to say, “Mommy this farm market is fun”.  And that is exactly the sentiment of most of the vendors and customers, an “oldtime” market where friends and neighbors gather on Saturday mornings  to talk and trade. Hope to see you at the market
