The Charlestown Chamber of Commerce will once again offer tours of the former Indiana Army Ammunition Plant. The tour route has been changed this year to offer visitors an enhanced experience. and recognize the development which has taken place at the site.
Chamber President T. Meurer said. “The River Ridge Commerce Center has done an excellent job of redeveloping a large part of the former Ammunition Plant. Their efforts, concentrated in the former bag loading area, have resulted in a lot of new construction and the addition of many jobs to our area economy. It has also resulted in the removal of most of the older buildings from the bag loading area where many of the roads are now open to the public, so we revised the tour to concentrate on the Propellant and Explosives (P&E) manufacturing area, which was originally the Indiana Ordnance Works.”
Guests will be transported over many of the roads in the P&E area, where the general public has never been allowed and prior tours did not travel. Guests will not be allowed to exit the bus but will travel through all of the areas used in the manufacturing process - acid production areas, powerhouses, single base propellant production, and rifle powder manufacturing.
Also new this year, the tours will be conducted on a Free Enterprise Systems trolley. The trolley offers guests a better view through larger windows.
Tours will leave from the Charlestown Business Center (Building 703), the former Ammunition Plant Administration Building which is now a commercial office building at the corner of Highways 62 and 3 in Charlestown. Tours will start at 9 a.m. and be offered at 10:30 a.m., 12 noon, 1:30 p.m., 3 p.m., and 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 25, which is also Charlestown Founders Day. Ticket prices remain at $12 for adults and $10 for children and seniors. Seating is extremely limited, so don’t delay!
Founders Day activities include a parade, classics car show, Arts & Crafts Marketplace, 3-on-3 basketball, food vendors, and carnival rides. The day will close with a spectacular fireworks display. Plan to tour the former Ammunition Plant and spend the rest of your day exploring all that Charlestown has to offer.
Tickets are now available at the Charlestown Library located at 51 Clark Road in Charlestown.
The Charlestown Chamber of Commerce would like to thank the sponsors: River Ridge Commerce Center, Free Enterprise Systems, Charlestown Business Center, Charlestown - Clark County Library.
