An Austin man was pronounced dead at the scene of a one-vehicle accident just after 2 a.m. on Saturday, April 2.

Carl R. Chandler II, 28, apparently suffered a fatal head injury when the 2003 Chevy Trail Blazer he was driving struck two trees off Moonglo Road.Deputy James Shelton was sent to the scene, located about 500 feet west of Zion Road. When he arrived, he found Chandler still belted into his seat. Chandler’s girlfriend, Audrey Berry, said she was following Chandler in her vehicle.

She said he had pulled some distance away from her, so all that she saw was the headlights of the Trail Blazer spin. She called for help when she came upon the wrecked SUV. Reconstructing the accident, Deputy Shelton said he found ruts in the dirt on the north side of the road which led to two damaged trees.   It appeared that the Trail Blazer struck one tree and then rotated around the other and then spun across the road before coming to a rest facing east on the road. Deputy Coroner Chris Fugate pronounced Chandler dead at the scene. Chandler was presently living and working in Brownstown but had previously been a resident of Scott County. Calling today (Wednesday) at the Buchanan Funeral Home in Austin begins at 9 a.m. and will continue until the funeral service at 11 a.m. The Rev. Gary Baker will officiate.
