Lady Braves win sectional Print
The Borden Lady Braves claimed their third sectional championship in the last four years with two victories Saturday, February 15th at New Washington. After weather postponed Friday night’s game, Borden was victorious over the Lanesville Lady Eagles in the semi-final game rescheduled for Saturday morning. The Lady Braves defeated Lanesville 51-20 to earn a spot in the Championship game Saturday night against the New Washington Lady Mustangs.
New Washington came out strong in the opening period of the Championship game. The Lady Mustangs Ashley Johnson scored 8 first quarter points to help New Washington to a 14-8 lead at the end of the quarter. Kristen Nestor’s two early 3 point shots helped Borden stay in within striking distance.
The Lady Braves pressure defense came out strong in the second quarter. The Lady Braves held New Washington to only one basket from the field and one free throw for the quarter. Two additional 3 point field goals by Nestor and a pair of layups by Lady Brave Natalie Ruedinger led to 23-17 Borden half time lead.
Borden added to their lead in the third quarter with solid team defense and a balanced offensive scoring attack. Lady Brave Abby Ellis scored pair of 2 point goals, Ruedinger a layup and Shelby Kirchgessner added her second 3 point shot of the quarter at the buzzer. The Lady Braves led 35-27 at the end of the quarter.
Lady Mustang Emilee Holloway tried to keep New Washington in the game in the second half with her five 3 point shots made. With 5:05 left in the fourth quarter she hit a 3 to cut the Borden lead to 6 points. The Lady Braves did not allow the game to get any closer. Strong foul shooting the reminder of the game by Borden (hitting 17 of 22 attempts) secured the Championship with a final score of 57-43.
The Lady Braves balanced team play was rewarded with the All Sectional Team  selections. Natalie Ruedinger was named 1st team All Sectional. Borden placed three additional players on the All Sectional 2nd team - Carson Casey, Abby Ellis, and Shelby Kirchgessner. The Sectional Tourney MVP was awarded to New Washington’s Ashley Johnson.
The Borden Lady Braves will travel to the West Washington Regional Saturday, February 23rd at 10:00 a.m.. The Lady Braves will play the winner of the Loogootee Sectional (Vincennes Rivet or Barr-Reeve) which was postponed due to weather and will be played Monday, February 17th.
