Floyd Central girls lose to Scottsburg Print

The Scottsburg Warriorettes continued their winning ways Thursday evening by defeating the visiting Floyd Central Lady Highlanders in the new look Charles E. Meyer Gymnasium. The Warriorettes got off to a solid 17-2 lead in the first quarter thanks in large part to the Warriorettes shooting over 57 percent from the field.

The Warriorettes led the game by as many as 33 points in the second half, but Floyd Central caught fire late in the second half to cut the final margin down to 23, 72-49. Even though the Warriorettes won their second straight game by over 20+ points Coach Donna Cheatham still sees a lot of room for improvement. “We started off the game very well. Our inside players (Norton and Wampler) were able to score quite a few points in the paint in thanks a large part to the great passing by Ashley Elliott. Overall though, we did not finish off the game well. We made a lot of stupid turnovers in the second half that allowed Floyd Central to outscore us by 10 in the fourth quarter. It just shows the youthness of our team. We made a lot of mistakes. We still have a long way to go.”

Katie Wampler led the Warriorettes with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Jill Romero added 18 points and 5 assists. Senior Symantha Norton had a double double as she compiled 16 points and 10 rebounds. Sophmore Kelsey Smith had 10 points and 5 steals, and the other sophomore Ashley Elliott had 4 points and had a sensational passing game by picking up 10 assists. The Warriorettes improve to 2-0 on the season. Their next game will be this Saturday against conference rival North Harrison.

The Scottsburg Warriorette JV team fell to Floyd Central by a score of 41-29. Hannah Gillespie led the Warriorettes with 17 points and Cabbie Collins added 12 rebounds. The JV Warriorettes record now stands at 1-1.
