The Charlestown Pirate Baseball team (11-4 / 4-1 MSC) completed a very important step in their quest for a conference title Monday night, May 4, when traveling to MSC/County rival Silver Creek (6-10/1-4 MSC) and winning.  The Pirates, committing only two errors, scored seven runs on ten hits and convincingly handed the home standing Dragons a 7-3 defeat to move within a game and a half of first place in the  Mid Southern Conference baseball race.
The Pirates will host the Austin Eagles (5-1 MSC), who just dropped their first MSC game to Salem, tomorrow in a pivotal conference game.
Pirate Seniors Vest, Brady, and Metzger all contributed doubles to secure the victory, while Metzger got the win on the mound to improve his record to 3 wins and 1 loss on the season.
"A good win tonight!  Cameron threw the ball very well tonight and was in command of all of his pitches.  Our offense did a good job of coming to life when we needed it and our defense played pretty well.  Overall, it was a real nice win," commented Coach Ricky Romans after the game.
All Pirate fans are encouraged to attend tomorrow night's home game versus Austin, 5 p.m. at the Charlestown Little League Park, and cheer Pirate baseball on their quest for their first MSC title since 1987.

Local teams compete in rain drenched North Harrison Invitational Track Meet PDF Print E-mail

The North Harrison Invitational Track Meet must have seemed more like a swim meet Friday afternoon to the athletes from the participating schools.
Several times, rain delayed the action, sending athletes scurrying for shelter from the rain. Several tents had been set up on the outside of the track fence, giving some added protection from the rain.
The meet even saw a total of 10 events, five in the girls’ division, and five in the boys’ division, canceled because of the conditions.
Both the boys’ and girls’ pole vault and long jump was canceled, accounting for four events.
“Those events just didn’t (go ahead) because of the conditions,” said North Harrison boys’ coach Joe Kellum. “There’s nothing you can do about it, it just happens.”
Also, both the girls’ and boys’ divisions of three different relay races were erased, accounting for a total of six more events altogether. Canceled were the freshman 1600 meter relay, the varsity 1600 meter relay, and the varsity 800 meter relay.
Even so, each division crowned a champion, even though detailed results and team scores were unavailable at the time of writing.
Brownstown’s Lady Braves won the girls’ division, and host North Harrison won the boys’ title for the Cougars.

In a possible preview of a match up in the Floyd Central Girls’ Tennis Sectional, the Floyd Central Lady Highlanders won a 5-0 sweeping of the North Harrison Lady Cats Wednesday (April 29) at the Floyd Central courts.
It wasn’t as though North Harrison didn’t win any individual games in any of the sets; they won games in every set except the two set match at the no. 3 singles position.
The Lady Highlanders managed to avoid sending any of the five positions into a third set, either.
At the no. 1 singles position, Carmen Schreiber def. Wynn Shroyer 6-3, 6-1. The no. 2 singles spot saw Annie Hunt win 6-1, 6-2 over Caitlyn Janes. And at the no. 3 singles position, Sandra McCaffrey def. Hannah Raake 6-0, 6-0.
