Commentary . . . My final thoughts PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 21 October 2009 00:00
When I started writing for Green Banner Publications (GBP) nearly three years ago I knew this day would come.  Honestly, though, I thought it would have come a year or so ago.  When GBP Publisher Joe Green and I first sat down and discussed me coming to work, I told him that I would do it until he was either fed up with me or I wasn't enjoying myself, whichever came first.
Well, I'm sure that Joe has been fed up with me on numerous occasions but for whatever reason did not pull the trigger.  However, in the past few months it has become clear to me that I am ready to move on.  Please understand that my desire to explore other options has nothing to do with anything at GBP—it is simply time to move on.
I want to thank Joe Green for giving me the opportunity and the freedom to do this job the way I thought it should be done.  Another individual that I want to thank is Donna Nunley, Office Manager for the Washington County Edition.  Without her discretion, organizational skills and loyalty, I would never have been able to do my job.  In addition, I want to thank former GBP Editor Mark Grigsby for taking the time to show me the ins and outs of small town journalism.  Although I wrote for some underground publications in college, my formal training is in English and Writing, not Journalism—there is a difference.
Above all, I want to thank the people who I cannot name for obvious reasons; those who were willing to provide me with information, both on and off the record, and point me in the right direct to ferret out the “story behind the story.”
Without your help I would not have known where to begin.

On Oct. 7, U.S. House of Representatives voted 412-0 to declare the week of October 18-23, 2009 as Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, according to Washington County SOAR! director, Marji Morris.
Residents of Washington County can take part in that celebration by signing up to be a tutor for Washington County SOAR!
The local SOAR! office is holding tutor training on Oct. 20, 22, 27, and 29. Each session will last from 5:30 to 8:30 PM at the Community Learning Center.
According to Morris,  due to growing student numbers, trained tutors are in short supply. The training is done in four 3-hour sessions. After that tutoring typically takes 1 1/2 hours per week.
Tutors will work one on one with a student. SOAR! supplies the training, materials, and meeting place. No tutoring is done in private homes. Tutors and students arrange sessions at a mutually agreeable time.
"We hope to be able to add ten or fifteen new tutors at this training," Morris said. "We've had several new students sign up, and we want to be able to provide them with assistance. Currently, only six volunteers have signed up for the October training."

EHS and EWMS Dance Teams hold fundraising event PDF Print E-mail

Are you smarter than your neighbor? Are you the one that always wants to play Trivial Pursuit at a family gathering? If you answered yes to these questions, then the Eastern dance teams have just the thing for you.
The Eastern High School and East Washington Middle School dance teams are joining together to create a fun-filled, family oriented night for you. They are hosting a “Trivia Challenge” night on October 24 at 7 p.m.
This is very much like playing Trivial Pursuit or Who Wants to be a Millionaire in your home. However, there is a plus. The grand prize to the winning team is $150 cash. You definitely can’t get that at home or by spending your Saturday night at the movies.
The teams are hoping to raise money for costumes and competition fees throughout this season. You could help by putting together a team of six people and joining in the fun. The cost is $10 per person. There will be lots of food, fun and laughter for all. This is a good opportunity for a family-oriented evening that’s very affordable. How often does that opportunity arise?
Who can play? Anyone! Ask your neighbors, relatives or co-workers. In fact, the teams are throwing out a challenge to the community. Businesses and schools can put together teams to see who is the “smartest” in the community. A trophy will be awarded that night to the smartest business or school!
