The Floyd County Youth Symphony (FCYS) is open to any qualified student in Southern Indiana or the Louisville metropolitan area. Organized in 1974, the orchestra’s mission is to offer outstanding young musicians the opportunity to experience a challenging music environment. Continuing this tradition, members of the FCYS are planning to perform at Walt Disney World, Florida, during Disney’s 25th Anniversary Magic Music Days, March 21-24, 2010.
This season’s auditions will be held at New Albany High School on September 14. Students should come prepared to play a scale that represents their range and a short excerpt from a solo or ensemble work that demonstrates their development as a player.
The FCYS is divided into two orchestras for students at differing levels of technical and musical development. The Philharmonic is a full orchestra for students who have achieved an advanced level of proficiency. Philharmonic String auditions will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, September 14, beginning with Violins from 5 to 6 p.m. Violas, Cellos and Basses will audition from 6 to 7 p.m. Philharmonic wind and percussion players will audition 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, October 26. There is a $25 audition fee and Pre-registration is not required. Philharmonic rehearsals are on Mondays from 6-8:30 p.m. and are under the leadership of directors Doug Elmore, Scott Cooksey, & Peter Hogoboam.
The Mini-Orchestra is open to string players through 8th grade. Auditions will be heard between 3  and 5 p.m. Monday, September 14. There is no pre-registration or audition fee required. The Mini-Orchestra is an ensemble for young, developing string players. Kathryn Burger Johnson and Susan Pfeifer direct the Mini Orchestra and rehearsals are 4 to 5 p.m. on Mondays.
The FCYS is unique in that the State of Indiana offers high school credit for participation. FCYS members must take private lessons and participate in their school orchestras, if one is available. Rehearsals for both groups will be at New Albany High School from September through December, 2009. Rehearsals from January to May, 2010 will be held at Highland Hills Middle School.

A Scottsburg man was taken into custody for questioning and then arrested by New York State officers on a charge of welfare fraud.
Kevin C. Lewis, 26, appeared in Scott Superior Court on Monday, August 17, on charges of battery and disorderly conduct stemming from a separate matter. He pleaded guilty to the disorderly conduct charge, and the battery charge was dismissed through a plea agreement. Lewis was sentenced to 180 days in jail, 176 of which were suspended on supervised probation. He was also given credit for two days previously served.
That wasn't the end of his legal problems, however. After that matter was handled in the local court, he was transported to the Indiana State Police post at Sellersburg. There, he was questioned by two detectives from New York State. One of the officers was a state policeman while the other was a detective with the Town of Wallkill Police Department.
According to Sgt. Jerry Goodin, Public Information Officer with the ISP Sellersburg post, detectives with the post became aware last week that Lewis was wanted on the welfare fraud charge. They were contacted by NY State officers, who had been searching for Lewis and recently learned that he was in the Scott County area.
Lewis was incarcerated in the Clark County Jail in Jeffersonville while he awaited extradition back to New York State.
