Harrison County man arrested in fatal hit and run |

On the evening of August 14, troopers and detectives from the Indiana State Police Post at Sellersburg
arrested Bryan A. Stephens, 21, of Oak Street in New Salisbury, in connection with a fatal hit and run accident earlier
this month. Stephens was incarcerated in the Clark County Jail on preliminary charges of Failure to Stop for a Fatality
Crash, a C Felony.
Troopers received a tip late in the afternoon on August 13 at the Sellersburg State Police Post that the
possible vehicle involved in the fatal hit and run that occurred on August 2 on Interstate 65 at approximately 4:07
a.m., was located at an address on Oak Street in New Salisbury. Troopers immediately went to the location and
secured a search warrant to seize the vehicle and other possible evidence of the crime.

Borden youth football to open home field |

The Borden youth football league would like to invite the community to its first ever home games of the Borden youth football Braves.
They are planning a ribbon cutting ceremony to dedicate the new football field inside the Borden track on Sunday August 24th, the ribbon cutting will be held before the first game at 1:30p.m.
The Braves Pee Wee ( 3 and 4 grades) playing against Henryville at 2 p.m.
The Braves Juniors ( 5 and 6 grades) playing against Henryville at 3:30 p.m. followed by the Seniors (7 and 8 grades) also playing Henryville at 5 p.m.

Wide range in proposed pay increases for county employees and elected officials |

The recently concluded 2009 Budget Hearing meetings were the public part of the long and tedious process of
preparing a budget for the county that has some relevance to anticipated revenues and makes a good faith effort to
balance the immediate wants of the community with the long term needs of the community.
The hard copy of the budget is summarized on 80+ pages of size 10 font covering all county government
expenditures for the 2007 and 2008 to date, plus the 2009 request broken down into line items of considerable detail.
Taken in its entirety, this document seems overwhelming and after only a short time can cause blurred vision and
pounding headaches. However, if a person were to glean any wisdom from the old East Indian saying that goes
something like, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” some interesting information begins to emerge. Of specific interest is the proposed pay increases for some county employees and some county elected officials.

Salem Common Council wrestles with financial shortfalls |

The Salem Common Council met in regular session on Monday evening, August 11 with all members present. The
minutes of previous meetings and all claims were approved unanimously.
Voting unanimously to transfer money to the General Fund from various other funds to avoid going into the red and to forego any salary increase for elected officials in the upcoming budget, the Council struggled to deal with a financial shortfall brought on by a delay in receiving property tax revenues and what Mayor David Bower described as “an inherited budget that ties our hands.”
Unable to determine what, if any, pay increase city employees might receive, the members of the Council voted
unanimously to table the topic until City Clerk Treasurer, Pat Persinger meets with representatives of the Department
of Local Government Finance during the last week of August.
According to Persinger, after that meeting she should be able to provide the Council solid numbers to work with
in developing the budget and, in turn, what might be available for pay increases.
