Nationally known stunt man “Tricky” Travelstead brings his breathtaking brand of entertainment to Salem Speedway on Saturday night, July 31st, as he headlines the Casey’s General Store Night of Thrills, presented by the Country Kitchen Buffet & Catering.

Travelstead, a veteran stunt performer that has traveled throughout the United States and Canada for more than 30 years, will thrill fans with such daring stunts as the “car explosion body burn”, the “steel wall crash” and the death defying “trailer crash”.

The famous “trailer crash” involves Travelstead driving a vehicle at high speed off a ramp and through a parked camper.

“Tricky may very well be the center of attention for many of the young fans in attendance on July 31st,” said Salem Speedway general manager Richard Deaton, “but some great racing action is also on tap.”

The Lucas Oil Super Stocks and Dave & Deb’s Winner’s Circle Street Stocks will be racing on the high banks, while the Salem Speedway Pure Stocks and Front Wheel Drive Stocks are set to share the new quarter-mile infield oval.

“This is a great night of family entertainment with our lowest ticket prices of the season,” said Deaton.

When the Lucas Oil Super Stocks return to Salem Speedway for the Casey’s General Store Night of Thrills, presented by the Country Kitchen Buffet & Catering, defending champion, Frank Kimmel II of Borden, Ind., will be attempting to protect a precarious three point advantage (304-301) over Louisville’s Tony Johnson in the current standings.

Former track champion, Chris French of Vine Grove, Ky., is third in the standings with 274 points, while Rookie of the Year candidate, David Frizzell of Jeffersonville is just two points back (272) in fourth.  Veteran Louisville racer Jerry Norris (262) rounds out the top five.

Second generation driver Winston Wood of Bloomington and defending Dave & Deb’s Winner’s Circle Street Stock champion, Brian Bayer of Birdseye, Ind., are locked in a tight battle for the top spot in the street stock standings.  Wood, who captured the first two races of the season, leads Bayer, winner of race number three, by just eight points (307-299).

A Seymour man has been charged in Scott Superior Court with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated after an accident in Austin which injured him and four nine-year-old boys. Irineo Aguilar, 22, reportedly admitted being the driver of the 1995 Dodge Saturn that wrecked on July 16 on State Road 256 East about 70 feet west of the highway’s intersection with Linden Drive. Capt. Paul Clute of the Austin Police Department responded to the accident, which occurred at 5:45 p.m. that Friday. Arriving at the scene, he said he saw an adult male, Aguilar, sitting on the road while three of the boys were standing in a ditch to the south of S.R. 256. A fourth boy, later identified as Allan Nala, was found unresponsive and face down in the northside ditch with what the officer said was a compound fracture of his left leg. The remaining three boys, Claudio Hernandez, Antonio Guerta and Jorge Preciado, were bruised and scratched from the accident as was Aguilar, who suffered facial injuries as well. All of the children were from Seymour. Open beer cans were found in and around the wrecked car, the officer’s report stated.

ASA Late Model Series officials notified Salem Speedway management on Thursday morning that the ASA Late Model Series Summer Shootout, scheduled for Saturday, July 10th, has been cancelled due to what was expected to be a low late model car count.

The ASA Late Model Series was the promoter of the planned Summer Shootout through a track lease agreement with Salem Speedway.

The USARacing Pro Cup Series was originally scheduled to promote the event before pulling out of their lease agreement with the track earlier this year.  The ASA Late Model Series then stepped in as promoter of the race before cancelling the weekend event on Thursday.

We’re certainly disappointed with the cancellation of the planned Summer Shootout,” said Salem Speedway general manager Richard Deaton.  “Unfortunately this is a sign of the times as many traveling race teams continue to struggle with expenses.”

The Lucas Oil Super Stock and Dave & Deb’s Winner’s Circle Street Stock races originally scheduled for Saturday will be rescheduled for later in the season.

Racing returns to the high banks of Salem Speedway on Saturday night, July 31st, as nationally known stunt man “Tricky” Travelstead headlines the Night of Thrills, presented by Paoli Pizzaria.

The Lucas Oil Super Stocks, Dave & Deb’s Winner’s Circle Street Stocks, Salem Speedway Pure Stocks and Front Wheel Drive Stocks will provide the racing action and Travelstead will thrill the fans with an array of death defying car crashes and explosions.
