    The message was clear, “This (violence) has to stop,” was given at the Men against violence against women rally held Friday, October 30 on the South side of the Courthouse lawn.
    More than 40 men came to show support for violence against women including, Salem High School Seniors along with Principal Derek Smith, Judge Bennett, Judge Newkirk, Mayor Bower, Prosecutor Dustin Houchin, Police Chief Scott Ratts, Washington County Sheriff Claude Combs and many more.
    John Kuss of Hoosier Hills PACT opened the rally by stating from July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009 the State of Indiana has had 60 domestic violence deaths.
    Each participant received a t-shirt stating  “Men against violence against women,” Kuss stated that it takes guts to come out here and to wear this shirt and asked them to have the guts to stand up an say no to violence.
    “I want to plant a seed in my generation put God first and think first before violence.” that was the statement that Salem Quarterback Christian Chastain spoke. Chastain also said that this was an opportunity to speak out and thank God for this program.

The 2009 Christmas Assistance Program (CAP) has begun PDF Print E-mail

    This year applications will not be accepted at the schools.  Applications will be taken for the program at the West Side Baptist Church, in Salem on November 14, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. and again on November, 15, 2-4 p.m..  Those applying will need to bring with them proof of residency.   In addition the application must include gross income for the past 12 months, for everyone living in the home.
    Applications are available at the Washington County Chamber of Commerce, located at 201 E Market St., Suite 104, Salem, and the Salem Public Library, located on Main St., in Salem.  Applications will also be available on November 14 & 15 at West Side Baptist Church.  An appointment time is not necessary.
Applicants must verify residency and provide their income for everyone in the household for the past 12 months.
    The changes are being made to make the program more efficient, in order to help more youth.
    The Christmas Assistance Program works with numerous organizations, including Salvation Army, Shop with a Cop, Colie Claus, and churches, organizations and individuals.  The program is available to Washington County youth ages 16 and below.

    Old Fashion Family Fun Night is the theme of Stacy Richardson’s idea.  Students in her East Washington Elementary school 3rd grade classroom will have the opportunity to bring home backpacks with a game the whole family can play as well as a healthy, tasty treat.
    “Stone Fox” will be studied in Leah Starrett’s 3rd grade East Washington Elementary classroom.  Students will create individualized reading tubs and will be given a chance to complete a hands-on project that relates to the book.  Students will be shown a DVD of the book and will also present their projects to community members.
Jenisa Collier’s Kindergarten class at Bradie Shrum Elementary School will be given the opportunity to hone and expand their reading skills with a Listening Library.  The library allows students to listen and read along to a book on a personal CD player.

Benefit Auction at A&M Auction House PDF Print E-mail

    There will be a Benefit Auction at A&M Auction House on November 1. Proceeds from the auction will go to help Angela Starnes with medical costs due to breast cancer.
    They are asking for merchandise for the auction or money donations. All donations can be brought to the auction house, located at 4911 Old Georgetown Road.
    Drop-off times are Saturday, October 31 from Noon to 3 p.m. and Sunday, November 1 from 9 to 11 a.m. The auction is set to begin at 12:30 p.m.
