Harrison County Hospital is offering free sports physicals for junior and senior high students (entering grades 7-12) planning on participating in sports during the next school year at Harrison and Crawford county schools. These free sports physicals are possible due to the generosity of local primary care physicians. Additionally, the Hospital’s physical therapy staff will offer free flexibility screenings for student athletes.

PHS falls at Floyd PDF Print E-mail

The young Providence Lady Pioneers turned in a valient effort for four innings in the season-opener March 30 at Floyd Central, but came out on the short end of the 14-3 score.

Providence scored one run in the first, one in the third and another in the top of the fifth and trailed just six three behind a strong pitching performance by freshman Katie Flanagan.

In the bottom of the fifth is when the wheels fell off. Seven Lady Highlanders in a row reached base in the bottom of the fifth and they went on to score eight runs, ending the contest via the 10-run rule.

Borden and Eastern split a pair of games PDF Print E-mail

The Eastern Musketeers traveled to Borden to play the Braves Saturday in a high school baseball doubleheader, but it didn’t look like the games were going to be held at all. The first game of the two was delayed by about 40 minutes after a shower drenched the field, and the Borden field had been readied again.

Baseball Mid Southern Conference outlook for 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Once again it’s time to start hearing the sound of a hard leather covered ball hit either a bat or hitting a leather glove, as the high school baseball team in early April.
The Mid Southern Conference will be decided between the start of the season and the end in of the regular season in late May, and every coach has some reason for optimism in the upcoming season. Returning seniors and other up and coming players always have everyone feeling at least partly optimistic about the new season every year. You get to start anew every season.
Salem baseball coach Jamey Wilson lost only three seniors to graduation in 2009, and has several returnees from their 2009 Mid Southern Conference title winners. It was the first time that Salem has won the Mid Southern Conference in baseball in the school’s history.
Wilson has three seniors returning this year, Christian Chastain, Josiah Farnsley, and Nathan Busick. Chastain will play second base, Farnsley will play short stop, and Busick will be first baseman.
Several starters will be from the junior class this season, with Nick Rainey (pitcher), Casey Spalding (third base), Brock Bush (catcher), and Hayden Burton at the ready.

Softball Mid Southern Conference outlook for 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Since every season is new in high school sports, hope springs eternal in every sport played, to some degree or another.
The high school softball season will start in early April, and here is a look at the way the Mid Southern Conference race will be shaping up in 2010, from the point of view of the coaches of the teams.
When Megan Smith injured her ACL late in the basketball season, she not only ended her senior season in girls’ basketball, but also her senior season in softball. So Salem will have to manage without her on the field this season, according to Coach Bob Motsinger.
Motsinger was asked if it looked very likely she would be able to come back at all in 2010 in softball.
“I doubt it,” he said recently. “It doesn’t look like it. I think her injury was more than just an ACL.”
