EHS, SHS Alumni Banquets this weekend PDF Print E-mail

The Pekin/Eastern Alumni Banquet will be held on Saturday evening, April 28, at 6:30 pm in the Eastern High School cafeteria. Doors open at 5:30 pm. The classes of 1962, 1987, 2002 and 2012 will be honored.
The cost of tickets is $15. They are being sold at the New Washington State Bank in Borden, the PNC Bank in Pekin, and the PNC, First Harrison and Mid-Southern Banks and Salem Electric in Salem.
The Pekin/Eastern High School Directory will be available for $8 and Dowlingfamilyphotos will be available at the event to take class pictures.

SHS April 27
The 135th Salem High School Alumni Banquet will be held April 27, 2012 at 7 pm in Brooks Memorial Gym. 
Brown Catering will be catering the dinner. 
Honor classes are 1962, 1987 and 2012. 
Tickets are $14.00 per person and will be on sale from April 2nd to April 21st at Salem Apothecary, Dan Mar Pharmacy, LaGene Jewelers and Links Clothing. For group sales of 10 or more wishing to sit together contact Shirley Nale at 883-2176. 
Those wishing to order tickets by mail should send a self-addressed stamped envelope with a check made to Salem Alumni Association for the correct amount to Shirley Nale, PO Box 404, Salem, IN 47167 and tickets will be mailed to you.
Speakers from the honor classes will include Russ Brown and John Heavin,
The following is the bios on Brown and Heavin.
Russ Brown, SHS Class of 1962
Approaching a 50-year career in journalism, including 30 years with The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Russ Brown has written for numerous publications. At the Courier-Journal he was Indiana Sports Editor, with duties consisting of overseeing a staff of writers and photographers for Southern Indiana high school coverage. He wrote about Indiana University basketball/football, including the national championship basketball seasons of 1976 and 1981. From the mid-1980s thru 1990s Russ was responsible for coverage of University of Louisville sports, primarily basketball and football. In that role, he covered Coach Denny Crum’s 1986 national championship club and accompanied them to the White House for a Rose Garden ceremony with President Reagan.
Russ has been published in USA Today, Sports Illustrated, Street & Smith and Athlon Basketball and Football Yearbooks, Louisville Magazine and numerous other publications.
Currently he is the co-founder, writer/editor of Louisville SportsReport, a weekly publication dedicated to University of Louisville and Big East Conference sports. His primary duties involve game coverage and features on U of L basketball and football teams, the Big East Conference Tournament in New York, and the NCAA Tournament.
He is the author of a book, Cardinals Handbook: Stories, Stats and Stuff about University of Louisville Basketball.
Over his 50 year writing career, Russ has covered most major sporting events, including many NCAA Tournaments and Final Fours, Rose Bowl, other major bowls, World Series, Pan-Am Games, College World Series, PGA Golf Tournaments, and Indiana and Kentucky High School Basketball/Football Championships.
Russ is the former owner/founder of: Kentuckiana Health Fitness & Sports & Hoosier Health Fitness & Sports. His hobbies are Travel, Photography, Music, and Reading.
Russ and his wife Mary Jo have three children, Michelle, Natalie, Matthew, and seven grandchildren.
John Heavin
Heavin is a teacher at Salem Middle School and spent many years as an assistant football coach.
He is a graduate of Hanover College and Indiana University Southeast.
He and his wife Elizabeth have two daughters, Ella 9, Audrey, 5.
Heavin is a member of Blue River Baptist Church and a past winner of DAR county history teacher of the year award.
His hobbies include reading, writing, saltwater fishing and being an Elvis fan.

Four people injured in three vehicular accidents on county roads PDF Print E-mail

Four people were hurt in three vehicular accidents investigated by the Sheriff’s Department over the past two weekends.
On Saturday afternoon, April 14, an injury accident occurred on U.S. Highway 31 South at its t-intersection with Radio Tower Road.

SHS softball team gets big win over North Harrison PDF Print E-mail

The Salem High School girls’ softball team improved to 5-3 with a win last Thursday over North Harrison.
The Lady Lions were paced by a strong pitching effort by Emily Brishaber, who improved her season record to 4-1.
Salem got the scoring started with three runs in the first inning.
