Up to 35 lucky incoming first and second grade students will experience “Summer Success with Duke Energy!” thanks to a generous grant of $10,572 to East Washington School Corporation from the Duke Energy Foundation to offer summer remedial reading instruction for students.  Students selected for the program are those needing extra assistance prior to the start of the new school year with phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension to build skills to keep them on grade level with their peers.  The goal of the program is to increase student reading fluency and comprehension.  Individual goals for students will be to complete all daily lessons, increase his/her comprehension score by at least one point and increase the words read and understood per minute by a minimum of five words.  Teachers hired by the School Board recently to provide instruction are Mrs. Debbie Mishler and Mrs. Mindy McKinley.  Students will also be supported in the classroom by instructional assistant Rachel Underwood.
