?    Several Charlestown residents and city officials attended the dedication of the Bicentennial Time Capsule marker in Greenway Park on the Saturday morning after Christmas. Included were some youngsters who are much more likely to be at the unearthing in 50 years, than the individuals placing artifacts into the container then.
The monument was created by Jeff Grayson, of Grayson’s Monument, and is positioned where the paths intersect below the falls. The artifacts are being placed in a vault buried in the ground immediately behind the marker; not within the marker itself. Chris Grayson was in attendance, on behalf of Grayson’s and commented, “I think this is just a great opportunity for the community to look forward and also look behind us; where we came from to where we’re going. And in 2058 those residents that will be here can come down and see where this community has come from in the past. The people here kind of know where we come from, but our kids and grandkids will have that opportunity and greater detail in 50 years.”

?    Even though the Pirate basketball team was unable to successfully defend its 2007 Holiday Tournament crown, sophomore guard Steven Coyne had a coming to varsity basketball life of sorts during this year's Silver Creek Holiday Tournament.
Coyne took advantage of extra playing time in game one of the tournament versus Silver Creek, scoring 16 points and making an impact on defense.
Charlestown High School varsity Coach Sean Smith rewarded Coyne the following night in game two versus Clarksville; where Coyne entered the varsity starting line-up and contributed another outstanding performance including nine points.
The Pirates suffered losses in both contests but showed more improvements in various areas of the game, and by several players.
As a result of Coyne's tournament performances, he was named by participant school coaches to the 48th  Annual Silver Creek Holiday Tourney All-Tournament Team (the only Pirate to be named this year).

?    Based upon two successful seasons of the “pilot” program at Silver Creek,  the West Clark Community School Board has been asked to approve the start of the football program in Henryville.
At the December school board meeting, booster member Linda Uhl, supported by parents and members of the community, asked the school board to put the Henryville vote on their agenda for the January meeting.
There has always been strong community support for the implementation of this new athletic program but the school board elected to make Silver Creek a “pilot” before approving other programs. Success of the pilot program was based not only on game scores but noticeable improvement in academic performance, attendance and behavior in players. Teachers and school administrators have commented on the positive changes they have observed in members of the football team.
If you are interested in getting the football program in Henryville schools underway, the Boosters encourage you to attend the January school board meeting.  The meeting will be held on Thursday, January 8  at the West Clark Community School Administration building next to Silver Creek High School. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m.

?    The Charlestown Beautification Committee has ended the sale of the Bicentennial stepping stones and ask that those that have not picked up their stones take their ticket stub to the Concrete Lady on Highway 3 and pick the stones up.
The Concrete Lady ran some extra stepping stones so those that did not get a chance to buy from the CBC can go directly to the plant and purchase any of the four designs.
According to Chairperson Jo Ann Goodlett, the committee had a net profit of over $3,500 from the sales of the stones that helped fund the Bicentennial event.
The Woods family have again agreed to donate a 2009 stone to help fund the CBC in 2009. Artist Dixie Busby is working with the Concrete Lady on the new design that will be ready this Spring.
The Beautification Committee would like to extend their thanks to Carl, Peggy and Tony Woods of the Concrete Lady and to artist Dixie Busby and Jo Ann Goodlett and Geri Heal for their work in making this project a success.

?County Council begins new year by tweeking budget PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 06 January 2009 00:00
?    The Washington County Council met in its first regularly scheduled meeting of 2009 with all members present.  After one correction, the minutes of the previous meeting were approved unanimously.
The first item of business was for reorganization of the Council by way of electing a Council President and Vice-President.  In a split vote, the Council elected Mark Manship as President and John Fultz and Vice-President.
The Council heard from Washington County Prosecutor, Dustin Houchin, who explained his efforts thus far to cut expenses by turning over the responsibility of bad check collections to a secretary rather than a deputy prosecutor.  In addition, Houchin requested and received approval to distribute $3,252 of state money into education and travel expense funds for Adult Protective Services.
