A Scottsburg woman suffered fatal injuries in a one-vehicle crash on North Terry Road on Saturday morning, October 26.

Sheriff’s deputies also investigated a wreck early in the morning on Sunday, October 27, on Crothersville Road in which a young man and a teenager were injured.

Investigators reckon that Karla Faye Owens, 35, Scottsburg was probably traveling too fast on North Terry Road when the Isuzu SUV she was driving went off the edge of the county road about 1/8th of a mile north of Harrod Road. The mishap occurred around 11:45 a.m.

The jolt apparently caused Owens to lose control of the vehicle which continued on, striking the ditchline, then a fence line. It traveled on to also strike a creek embankment, which physical evidence related caused the vehicle to roll. It was apparently at that time that Owens was thrown from the vehicle.

The Isuzu continued on, finally stopping in an inverted position in the creek bed.

Other drivers and residents along that section of Terry Rd. called 9-1-1 for assistance. First Responders and firemen with the Johnson and Jennings volunteer fire departments also answered the call as did Detective Rick Barrett, Deputy Jac Sanders and Sheriff Dan McClain.

Owens’ body was found several yards from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy County Coroner Chris Fugate.

Evidence strewn in the heavily-overgrown pasture where the vehicle came to rest indicated to officers and firemen that Owens may have had a small child with her. Det. Barrett requested a grid search on foot to determine if that was the case, and those on the scene fanned out, checking the ground. It was later learned by the department that Owens had been by herself when the mishap occurred.

The investigation of the accident kept deputies at the scene some two hours.

Funeral arrangements for Owens are pending at the Buchanan Funeral Home in Austin.

Just after 4 a.m. on Sunday morning, Deputies James Shelton and Joe Johnson and Reserve Deputy James Wampler were called out to an injury wreck on Crothersville Road about 1,800 feet from its intersection with Jack Morgan Road.

There, officers found a 2008 Chevy Impala fully engulfed in flames and four young men and a young woman, two of which were injured.

The driver, Michael D. Martin, 20, Jeffersonville, said he was westbound on Crothersville Rd. He said he wasn’t familiar with the road. When it curved, he apparently continued straight into a field. The car was sitting 40 to 50 yards off the road, Deputy Shelton noted.

Those injured were Martin, who suffered back pain, and a 17-year-old female, Julian J. Ryan Pierce, also of Jeffersonville. She had a non-incapacitating injury to a knee/lower leg/foot. Scott County EMS technicians treated both at the scene and then transported them to Scott Memorial Hospital.

The car was a total loss.
