Uhlenbrock enters not guilty plea to murder charge in first court appearance Tuesday

The man accused of fatally shooting his stepfather and seriously wounding a family friend made his first courtroom appearance on Tuesday afternoon, November 10. Jason Frederick Uhlenbrock, 29, Austin, is charged with a count of murder and attempted murder in the death of Robin L. Everitt, 59, and the wounding of family friend Terry Carr. He allegedly grabbed a handgun laying on a counter at the Everitt home on Bogardus Road and emptied the magazine of the Sig Sauer 9mm gun during the incident. The shootings occurred shortly after 4 p.m. From information gathered, Uhlenbrock apparently bicycled to the house from his apartment on U.S. Highway 31 North in Austin to request use of a shotgun. Everitt reportedly refused his stepson's request. Prior to Uhlenbrock's visit, Robin Everitt and his wife, also named Robin, were entertaining a few friends, playing and discussing music. One of those friends, Terry Carr, was also allegedly shot in the abdomen by Uhlenbrock, as Carr sat on a sofa in the couple's living room.

Hearing held on reported violations of County's Unsafe Building Ordinance

A hearing preceded the normal business meeting of Scott County Commissioners on Monday night, November 2, involving several pieces of property alleged to have violated the county's Unsafe Building Ordinance. The session was scheduled to allow those property owners notified of possible violations a chance to talk with Commissioners and schedule action to correct the alleged violations. Commissioners were looking at three properties, 1887 North State Road 3, Lexington; 1276 North Boatman Road, Scottsburg; and 4027 West State Road 56, Scottsburg. A couple who owns one of the pieces of property attended the hearing. After talking with the couple, who is divorcing and is in the midst of a dispute over ownership, Commissioners told them to work out their legal problems and get the property cleaned up. Ken McMichael, chairman of the Greater Scott County Chamber of Commerce's Agri-Business Committee, appeared before the officials to get their continued support for the Farmers' Market that operated at the Fairgrounds this past spring and summer.

Former Pirate basketball teams to be recognized

The Charlestown Pirate Boys Basketball program, in conjunction with the upcoming season's Farewell to Dunn Arena festivities, will be honoring past teams of the 2000's at the home season opener on Friday December 4 versus Scottsburg. Former Pirate Basketball teams of the 1990's will be honored at the following home game versus Clarksville on Friday, December 11. Charlestown preparing to become “Christmas City”, Light Up Charlestown set

While most citizens are preparing their menus for the upcoming Thanksgiving day meal and looking forward to the time spent with family and friends, some have already started planning for the Christmas season. Many citizens have taken advantage of the present from Mother Nature, the beautiful weather in early November, to begin decorating their yards and homes for the season. While those citizens have taken their hundreds of lights and made beautiful scenes, some working with the City of Charlestown have taken hundreds of thousands of lights to make Charlestown the Christmas City. “We have 108,800 lights ready right now,” stated Josh Campbell, who is part of the mastermind behind the lighted Christmas show. Campbell, along with Mark Obermiller, have spent some 600 hours thus far, preparing for the city’s big holiday season kick-off, Light Up Charlestown. Obermiller is locally famous for his extravagant light display at his home in Lexington. Campbell first met Obermiller when he was traveling home from visiting family in Scottsburg and noticed the light display in 2002. “I stumbled on Mark’s display in 2002. I stopped and seen it. I then went a couple more times in 2002,” Campbell stated.

Board of Directors and committee members needed

At the YMCA, your time and talent go a long way. Every hour you spend as a YMCA volunteer translates into a better community and a better future for young people. It contributes into a safer, more viable community that's a good place to live and work. YMCAs are first and foremost volunteer organizations. To put it in perspective, not every YMCA has a building, but every YMCA has volunteers. All 2,663 YMCAs in the United State are volunteer driven. Local volunteers establish and run YMCAs. This insures that the local Y meets the needs of their community. As a YMCA volunteer you can help in wide variety of ways. The Washington County YMCA is seeking volunteers to serve on committees and the board of directors. Volunteers on the board or committees typically volunteer 2 to 4 hours pre month. We ask that they attend regularly scheduled meetings, make an annual donation to the Y, and seek donations as needed.
