The Salem city council held their first monthly meeting of 2012 on Monday, January 9, and with a new year came new faces to the regular proceedings. Warren Jones (District 2) and Ron Haendiges (District 3) were selected to replace Lesle Leis and Nancy Fultz, whose terms ended last month.
The start of the 2012 session has been a tumultuous one to say the least. For the second session in a row, the House Democrats failed to show up to the House Chamber on account of the controversial Right-to-Work bill. Without a Democratic presence, the House Republicans were unable to begin conducting the business we were elected to do – a job that the House Democrats seem to have forgotten.

INDOT Seymour District Crews Ready for Winter Forecast
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) Seymour District is making preparations for the winter weather forecast. INDOT crews are currently applying salt brine on interstates and state highways to minimize precipitationimpacts. Crews will monitor weather conditions throughout the day for expected snow and falling temperatures. Salt trucks are ready and waiting to treat roadways when needed. INDOT’s top priority is snow and ice removal, focusing on the safety of the motoring public.
The Salem High School boys’ basketball team was clicking on all cylinders Friday night in a 79-54 win over visiting Orleans. The Lions shot 65.1 percent from the floor and out-rebounded the Bulldogs 31-16.
