    This year applications will not be accepted at the schools.  Applications will be taken for the program at the West Side Baptist Church, in Salem on November 14, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. and again on November, 15, 2-4 p.m..  Those applying will need to bring with them proof of residency.   In addition the application must include gross income for the past 12 months, for everyone living in the home.
    Applications are available at the Washington County Chamber of Commerce, located at 201 E Market St., Suite 104, Salem, and the Salem Public Library, located on Main St., in Salem.  Applications will also be available on November 14 & 15 at West Side Baptist Church.  An appointment time is not necessary.
Applicants must verify residency and provide their income for everyone in the household for the past 12 months.
    The changes are being made to make the program more efficient, in order to help more youth.
    The Christmas Assistance Program works with numerous organizations, including Salvation Army, Shop with a Cop, Colie Claus, and churches, organizations and individuals.  The program is available to Washington County youth ages 16 and below.

WCCF’s D. Jack Mahuron Education Fund awards over $3800 for Innovative Ideas in the Classroom PDF Print E-mail

    Old Fashion Family Fun Night is the theme of Stacy Richardson’s idea.  Students in her East Washington Elementary school 3rd grade classroom will have the opportunity to bring home backpacks with a game the whole family can play as well as a healthy, tasty treat.
    “Stone Fox” will be studied in Leah Starrett’s 3rd grade East Washington Elementary classroom.  Students will create individualized reading tubs and will be given a chance to complete a hands-on project that relates to the book.  Students will be shown a DVD of the book and will also present their projects to community members.
Jenisa Collier’s Kindergarten class at Bradie Shrum Elementary School will be given the opportunity to hone and expand their reading skills with a Listening Library.  The library allows students to listen and read along to a book on a personal CD player.

State revenue reported below projections at recent East Washington School Board PDF Print E-mail

     Superintendent Phyllis Ammick provided an update to the board regarding the Governor's press conference on October 8. The Governor reported that state revenue was $254 million below projections and that further cuts to the budget, including state support to schools must be considered.
    Superintendent Ammick recommend the board to approve the Resolution to adopt the Budgets, CPF and bus replacement plan. The board approved 4-0.
    Superintendent Ammick presented to the board a License agreement with Neola, whom are a company that follow Indiana laws to make sure the school policies are updated  and or added when needed. The board requested to take it under consideration until the November Board meeting.
    The board approved the proposed payment agreement for the Band Boosters portion of payments due for the band uniforms.

New corporation mission statement adopted at West Washington School Board meeting PDF Print E-mail

     At the recent West Washington School Board meeting William Van Cleave moved to adopt the following corporation mission statement: It is our mission of the West Washington School Corporation to insure all students a safe and caring environment while providing them an innovative, stimulating and positive education. We encourage all students to: Reach their highest potential academically; develop a positive value system that will promote responsible citizenship, a positive self-concept, a sense of community, and respect for cultural, religious and racial diversity; develop individual and group problem-solving skills necessary to be successful in an ever-changing world. The motion passed 7-0.
    Superintendent Jackson reported that Deputy Treasurer Amber Karr was terminated effective October 15 and recommended the board to hire Barb Davis as corporation treasurer to replace retiring Treasurer. VanCleave moved to accept Jackson's recommendation at the current salary of $33,700.00 with a $200,000 bond effective November 1, 2009. The motion passed 7-0 with a second by Tim Barksdale.
    Lee Barger addressed the board concerning comments made to him by the high school principal along with several issues concerning his son. Superintendent Jackson said he would address the issues and would return a call to Barger after he had time to look further into the matter. The board approved to adopt the 2010 budget passing 7-0.
    The following field trips were approved: Mr. Harkness with Spell Bowl to unannounced destination; Mrs. Tragesser and Mrs. Clements along with 3-5 Junior Prom Committee students to New Albany to select a location for the 2010 prom on October 22, 2009; Mr. Wilson and the Journalism class to the Annual IUS Journalism Conference on October 20; Mrs. Early and Health Careers to Spencerian College on October 30; Mr. Myers and BPA Video Production Team to Galt House to attend the Internal Student Medial Festival on October 31; Ms. Dillard and Mrs. Brown along with 9-12 students to Louisville to tour the Mega Caverns on November 4; Eighth grade students and teacher to Louisville Science Center on November 25; Elementary Dram students and sponsors to Derby Dinner Playhouse on December 17; Ms. Dillard and Mrs. Brown with 12 students to Falls of the Ohio on October 21; Ms. Dillard and Mrs. Brown with 9-12 students to Becks Mill on October 23 and Ms. Dillard and Mrs, brown with 11th and 12th graders to Louisville Science Center on October 28.
    The next school board meeting will be Monday, November 16.
