County Council struggles with proposed 2010 budget PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 16 September 2009 00:00
The Washington County Council met in regular session on Tuesday, September 8 with all members present.  The minutes of previous meetings and all claims were approved unanimously.
After quickly dispensing with an abbreviated agenda that included a legal opinion on the make up of the Property Tax Assessment Board of Appeal and agreement to act as agent for the hospital to receive nearly $600K from the state of Indiana, the Council turned its attention to the proposed 2010 budget.
Depending on whose numbers are to be used, the proposed General Fund must be cut somewhere between $330K and $380K.  According to Washington County Auditor Sarah Bachman, her sources at the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance said that a proposed budget overage of somewhere under $400K would not be out of line.
Various members of the Council discussed the logic of submitting the current proposed budget.  After exchanges marked by what can only be described as confusion and uncertainty, the Council agreed to call for a joint public meeting with the Board of Commissioners on Wednesday, September 16, in hopes of working out a solution.
The Council is required to provide a completed proposed budget for public review and input prior to submitting it to the state.  The public hearing on the proposed 2010 budget is set for Tuesday, September 22 at 7pm.

Awareness Washington County held its opening retreat at the Spring Mill Inn on Sept. 9-10. The theme for the year is "cultivating leadership."
This year's class is made up of 21 people from diverse backgounds in Washington County. At the retreat, they learned about servant leadership, were introduced to the 21st century leadership capacities, and began to analyze Washington County in terms of how the various groups in the county operate.
Many of the topics to be explored this year include themes that were brought out by the community in the Washington County Hometown Competitiveness survey. The group has already discussed the importance of elected leaders being servant leaders.
Many class members stated that Learning Styles and Steps to a Performing Community were among the significant learnings to date. In the next few weeks they will be applying what they have learned so far and exploring the county for their Camera Safari.
