Utility work and right-of-way clearing has begun for the four mile new By-Pass road around the east side of Salem.

A two lane asphalt road with wide shoulders will connect State Road 135 (S.R. 135) south of Salem and State Road 56 (S.R. 56) east of Salem.  The new road will have 5 major bridges plus other smaller culverts.  The road will connect with S.R. 135 0.5 mile south of Becks Mill Road south of Salem and proceed north east to S.R. 56 near Quaker Road.  Besides the bridges over roads, CSX railroad, and the West Fork of Blue River the new road will intersect with S.R. 60 just east of Saddle Back Trail Road.  One county road, Lake Salinda Road will be permanently closed at the By-Pass.  Lake Salinda Road will have Cul-De-Sacs at the By-Pass.

Gohmann Asphalt and Construction of Clarksville was the winning bidder on this project with a bid of $15,723,000.00.

The contract has a completion date of October 30, 2012.

Work Zone Safety Awareness Week is April 4-8, 2011, and INDOT is joining with other states to stress “Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For Everyone.”  On average four out of every five people killed in highway work zones are drivers or passengers, not highway workers.  And steeper fines or penalties await drivers who speed or drive recklessly through a work zone.  To avoid becoming a statistic, INDOT urges drivers to follow the safety tips listed at www.WorkZoneSafety.IN.gov.

When Salem High School football Head Coach Brian Motsinger stepped down following a win-less 2010 season, one of his assistants, Blair Thompson, had hopes of taking over the SHS program.
Thompson, however, reevaluated that dream when he caught wind that his beloved Lions could possibly land Mo Moriarity to that position.
“As soon as I heard that (Coach Mo) was remotely interested I begin telling people that we’ve got to make this happen,” Thompson said. “Opportunities like this don’t come around very often and I knew how great it would be for our school and community.”
