On November 18, 1967, Sergeant Sammy Davis was in Vietnam when his unit at “Fire Support Base Cudgel”[7] west of Cai Lay, fell under machine gun fire and heavy mortar attack by an estimated three companies of Vietcong from the 261st Viet Cong Main Force Battalion. Upon detecting an enemy position, Davis manned a machine gun to give his comrades covering fire so they could fire artillery in response. Davis was seriously wounded, but ignored warnings to take cover and accept medical attention, taking over the unit’s burning howitzer and firing several shells himself. He also disregarded his inability to swim due to a broken back, and crossed a river on an air mattress to help rescue three wounded American soldiers. He ultimately found his way to another howitzer site to continue fighting the NVA attack until they fled. The battle lasted two hours.

CLARK COUNTY, Ind.—The Indiana Department of Transportation will restrict southbound Interstate 65 lanes for bridge repairs at the Biggs Road overpass north of Memphis during overnight hours—weather permitting—beginning next Wednesday (JUNE 8).
Southbound I-65’s right lane will be closed at 10 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday while a specialty subcontractor straightens a damaged steel beam over the west side of the north-south interstate. Right or left southbound lanes will then be closed nightly at 10 p.m. while a splicing plate is installed and other work continues at the bridge site. INDOT officials say operations may continue until the end of the month.
Restrictions will be lifted on I-65 lanes every morning by 6 a.m.
No closures are planned atop the Biggs Road bridge. The 4-span structure overpasses I-65 one mile south of State Road 160 in Clark County. It measures 223½ feet in length with clear roadway side-to-side of 24 feet.
E & B Paving is the state’s prime contractor for this $127,940 repair project.

CLARK COUNTY, Ind.—The Indiana Department of Transportation will begin restricting northbound Interstate 65’s left lane between mile markers 11.7 and 16.4 in Clark County—starting at 9 p.m. tonight (JUNE 3) to clear the way for paving operations. Construction trucks and a supply vehicle will occupy the left lane while a motorpaver lays an initial course of asphalt opposite the barrier wall.
This closure will continue to be in effect until 3 p.m. tomorrow. It will resume again next week between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Meanwhile, the northbound I-65 right lane will remain open to traffic.
While the left lane is closed next week, bridge beams will be delivered and set at the Perry Crossing structure.
E & B Paving of Clarksville is the prime contractor for INDOT’s $67 million Major Moves 2020 project that is rebuilding the existing roadway and adding travel lanes on I-65 from 2.8 miles south of S.R. 160 near Memphis Road to 1.02 miles north of S.R. 60 just past Old State Road 311. This work includes bridge widening with new superstructures at Memphis Road, Perry Crossing, Muddy Fork and Old S.R. 311.
