?Mom charged with failing to see that child attends school PDF Print E-mail

?    A Scottsburg mother has been charged with violating the Indiana Compulsory School Attendance Law.
Pauline L. Pappas, 37, will face trial on the charge on April 6, according to court records.
Pappas’ child had missed 29 days of school up to November 20, the probable cause affidavit stated.
Scott School District 2 officials had sent several letters to Pappas about her child missing school. She attended a meeting of the Scott County Attendance Review Board in October in regard to the absences, and board members had worked out an “action plan” for the mother and her child to follow to ensure that the student would be in school on a regular basis.
The affidavit stated that Pappas failed to follow this plan, and the child continued to miss school.
An Indiana State Trooper, Ray Dawson, visited the Pappas home twice in late November. He stated in the affidavit that the woman failed to provide him with any medical records that would support the child having a reason to miss school.
The charge is a Class B misdemeanor.

?    An Austin man was arrested on Wednesday, January 14, and charged with the December 16 robbery of D&M Grocery on the north side of that community.
Zach “Zachie” White, 24, was taken into custody by Austin police and transported to the Scott County Security Center in Scottsburg. What apparently made the case against White was his appearance in videos made by security cameras in a couple of other businesses. In each of the videos, recorded on December 16, White was wearing what appeared to be the same clothing described as being worn by the robber by a clerk at the small family-operated grocery. A clerk at one of those other stores also identified the man as White.
The suspect is charged with one count of robbery, a Class C felony. When he appeared for an initial hearing in Scott Circuit Court on January 15, a not guilty plea was entered for him. White was assigned a jury trial date of June 29.
Prosecutor Jason Mount also filed a petition for detainer on behalf of the State of Indiana. White will be held for 15 days without bail. Thereafter, bail will be set at $100,000 corporate surety or full cash.

?    The Austin Lady Eagles enjoyed a busy week participating in the annual Rumble on the River holiday tournament held at Southwestern High School on January 2 and 3.
Austin won three straight games to advance to the championship game that Saturday night. Ultimately, however, the Lady Eagles were defeated by Fishers’ Lady Tigers.
Austin’s first game was played against the Columbus East Lady Olympians. The lady Eagles started from the field 0/3 to trail the Columbus team 8-0. Austin quickly came into it, however, and Ashley Dowling hit two treys to put the lady Eagles on top 27-24. Austin stopped any second chance points by grabbing defensive boards in the paint. At the half, Austin led 41-33.
