Lots of bids for great merchandise added up to $30,773 raised by the 2014 Kids First Auction, held on November 22 and during the early morning hours of November 23.

Students from Austin and Scottsburg manned bidding boards with communications students behind the scottcounty.tv cameras at the bustling Knights of Columbus Hall. Not that middle or high school students did all the work, of course. Members of the Kids First board of directors were in control of the activities. Other stalwart volunteers stayed hours, staffing the kitchen and completing the many behind-the-scenes chores that go into making the Kids First event go smoothly.

Not that this year’s event was without its interesting aspects....

An out-of-county couple moving further north got lost and wound up in the Knights of Columbus parking lot. As their rented moving van was being backed, it scraped the passenger side and damaged the front bumper of the 2002 Mercury donated for the auction by Wheel and Deal Auto Sales.

The car sold as is for $1,800, advised Kids First volunteer Jessica Jones. A familiar face and KF supporter, Billy Graham, bought the vehicle.

The on-air auction was plagued from its 9 a.m. start with audio problems. Finally, at 5 p.m., a 20-minute recess was called by emcee Ed Amick. That break gave the scottcounty.tv crew time to work with a crew sent by Warner Cable and get that problem resolved. Warner was profusely thanked for its efforts to correct the problem with new equipment brought up from Louisville, Ky.

Custody of Millard, the huge stuffed bear that is a symbol of Kids First from year to year, was won by employees of the City of Scottsburg. The bear is named in memory of the late Millard Moore, a longtime city employee who truly enjoyed the annual auction. The bear will be displayed in the lobby at City Hall until next November when Kids First will go on the air once again.

The final items were auctioned off around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

Despite what problems there were, people enjoyed the event, which raises Kids First funds to help needy children and their families year-round with issues from needing hearing aids to providing money to buy gas for hospital trips and air conditioners for children with asthma.

The wrap-up event on Monday night was also a hit, with auctioneers Bob Tobias and Nat Love keeping the action going and cajoling participants to spend. A wrap-up auction added another $2,969.50 to the treasury. Expenses of operating the event have not yet been calculated.
