A meeting between officials with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), contractor McAlister Excavating and utility company representatives on January 19 was the initial step in preparations for replacing a bridge on State Road 356 northeast of Lexington this summer.

The targeted bridge serves Woods Fork Creek.

The meeting took place at INDOT's Seymour District office. The bridge is located a little over three miles east of State Road 203. Its replacement will require the closure of S.R. 356 as well as Hardy Mill Road.

According to INDOT, cost to demolish and replace the structure with a composite pre-stressed concrete bridge is $1,017,814.

The work schedule calls for the S.R. 356 site to be staked and cleared after March 1. Utilities will relocate their services away from the site in April, May and June. During this time, flaggers will direct motorists around worksites.

Complete closure of the two roads will begin at the end of June. INDOT's official detour involves motorists using State Roads 56, 3 and 203.

Approximately 470 vehicles use the current bridge per day, according to an INDOT traffic count.

Updated information and a map of the closure are available on the INDOT TrafficWise service at indot.carsprogram,org. Roadway information is also available by calling 1-800-261-7623 or 511 from a mobile phone.
