The Indiana Department of Transportation is on schedule to close the State Road 56 bridge over Elk Creek two miles west of S.R. 39 next week—weather permitting— for a polymeric bridge deck overlay.  INDOT officials expect this closure will begin Wednesday morning (SEPTEMBER 23) and be lifted within two to three days, unless inclement weather causes a postponement.

Motorists will be detoured around the bridge closure via Interstate 65 and S.R. 60.

S.R. 56’s 3-span concrete girder bridge closed in mid-August for full-depth concrete repairs.  It reopened to traffic prior to Labor Day.

Since that time, the concrete patches have cured—allowing Phase II of the preservation project:  application of a 3/8-inch polymeric deck overlay applied in two lifts to seal the structure from hazardous weather and restore a high level of surface friction for skid resistance and as a measure to reduce hydroplaning.

S.R. 56 traffic count at Elk Creek is 4,070 vehicles per day.
