The Floyd Central Highlanders’ dream football season came to a sudden halt at Center Grove in the regional of football Class 5A Friday night. The Trojans won a decisive 42-7 victory in the contest, and the reason was pretty simple: they kept it simple, and ran straight up the middle.
Center Grove is the defending Class 5A state champs in football, and they showed why they won the title in state’s biggest class last season.
A total of three different Trojan running backs passed the 100 rushing yard mark in the game, and the school won its sixth regional title in football with the win.

The North Harrison Board of School Trustees voted 3-1 Thursday to reinstate Gregg Oppel as the varsity baseball coach at the high school. Fred Naegele, Gary Byrne, and Fred Renneker voted to reinstate, with Greg Beyerle voting against it. Bobby Chinn was not present at the meeting.
The board had voted 3-2 in their October meeting to not renew his contract. At that time, Renneker, Chinn, and Beyerle had voted against reinstating Oppel, with Naegele and Byrne voting to renew the contract.
An emotional Oppel said after the meeting, “I truly am happy to be back. I’m just tickled to be coaching at North Harrison again.”
Referring to the people in attendance at the meeting, Oppel said, “It’s a humbling experience and you truly never know how much support you have, until something like this happens. It gave me goose bumps to think that many people came here to support me.”

Floyd Central lost a 25-19, 22-25, 21-25, 25-22, 14-16 decision to the No. 1 ranked Elkhart Memorial squad Saturday at the Class 4A volleyball state finals at Yorktown High School.
The No. 3 ranked Lady Highlanders led the deciding game 10-4, but Elkhart Memorial rallied in the fifth game to take the win.
The Lady Highlanders led 14-11 in the fifth game when they were serving, but it wasn’t enough to take the victory.
This was the third straight year the squad from Floyd Central was defeated in the semi finals of the Class 4A state finals.
Lady Highlanders’ coach Bart Powell thought that the match got away from his team when they led 10-4 in the fifth game. Powell noted that Floyd didn’t run their usual offense a few times immediately after that and lost the momentum.
The championship game was won by No. 2 ranked Muncie Central, after they swept Elkhart Memorial 25-19, 25-23, 25-16.
Floyd Central’s Lady Highlanders close out their season 35-4.
