The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is predicting a nursing shortage, as demand for the highest quality of health care continues. In addition, as nurses of the baby boomer generation near retirement, thousands of new nurses will be needed as replacements. To encourage nurses to continue in their field of study, Newcomer Funeral Home is pleased to be offering a $1000 scholarship to a local nursing student.

FC band gets best finish at state since 1993 PDF Print E-mail

Eyes drifted towards the stadium seats packed with hundreds of people screaming. Fingers moved nervously over their instruments as they tried to remain calm. Thoughts swarmed their minds, ‘this is the last show, let’s make it our best.’ As the Floyd Central Marching Highlanders stepped onto the Lucas Oil field, they performed the show that would get them their best placing since 1993.
“It was the best show all season,” said band director Harold Yankey.

Community Thanksgiving dinner set for Nov. 23 PDF Print E-mail

The City of Salem is preparing to feed an estimated 250 people at the annual community Thanksgiving Dinner to be held November 23, 2010, at the American Legion Bingo Hall.  The dinner is open to all city residents and will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Mayor David Bower said area churches are invited to join in this time of fellowship and to encourage those in their congregation, who need a good holiday meal, to attend.

Two killed in crash on US 150 others injured PDF Print E-mail

On November 6, 2010 at approximately 9:22 PM the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department began receiving calls regarding a serious injury accident on US 150 west of SR 335.  Upon arrival of Greenville Township Fire Department, two subjects Jorail D. Looney, 20, Louisville and Peggy Phelps, 60 of Georgetown.
The Floyd County Combined Accident Reconstruction Team (CART) was called to investigate.

Oftentimes when you have a losing season in high school basketball, you are going through either an unsettled personnel situation, or else a rash of injuries.
In the case of the North Harrison Lady Cats, their 2009-10 campaign was a little of both.
First, last year’s four seniors played behind the eight seniors from the year before, and they in some cases didn’t see much varsity action until last year.
