The Salem High School girls’ cross country team claimed the regional championship last Saturday at Bedford North Lawrence.
“All of the girls should really be proud of this win,” said Head Coach Roger Bundy. “They ran awesome! We had five of our seven runners achieve PR’s (personal records) which means we are peaking at the right time.

Money, money and more money was the topic of discussion at the Washington County Council’s regular meeting on Monday, Oct. 3.
In addition to passing the county’s 2012 budget unanimously, several individual departments were in attendance to discuss finances.

Stephanie Atkins sentenced PDF Print E-mail

Superior Court Judge Frank Newkirk issued a sentence last week in the case of Stephanie Atkins.
Newkirk issued the guily verdict on Sept. 12.
According to Washington County Prosecutor Dustin Houchin, Atkins was sentenced to four years, with two years suspended.
Atkins will serve two years and the judge allowed her to have work release in Clark County.
“I respect the judges decision and I hope it helps deter this kind of behavior,” Houchin said.
The conviction stems from the theft of funds from the Beech Grove Cemetery Association in Washington County.
The investigation revealed from December of 2005 up until March of 2010, Atkins, who was in charge of the association’s finances, allegedly wrote checks on the cemetery association for more than $25,000 for her own personal gain.
During this same time period Atkins had allegedly provided financial reports to the Beech Grove Cemetery Association that were false, showing more money in the bank account than was actually there.
During that time Atkins also ran the Washington County Christmas Assistance Program. Houchin said after looking into that fund, he doesn’t suspect any wrong doing.

The Indiana High School Athletic Association announced pairings for the 39th annual state football tournament Sunday night.
Only one of the three teams drew a home game against a team they’ve beaten in the last three years.
The 1-7 Salem Lions haven’t gotten very much luck this year, but they did draw a home game against the only team they’ve beaten this year.
