4-H Week in Washington County starts Saturday PDF Print E-mail

A week long recruiting campaign for 4-H will begin in Washington County this Saturday, March 11, and will run through Friday, March 17. 4-H is a volunteer led organization that reaches out to the youth through a variety of programs based in both rural and urban settings. It’s also the largest youth-serving organization in the country for youth in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Tornado claims 6 lives in Pekin and Henryville PDF Print E-mail

Jeanie Lewellen walked with her granddaughter Janessa just moments after last Friday’s tornado ripped through Old Pekin Road.
Lewellen’s home was destroyed. She held her dog and a picture of her mother but her main concern was not on all that she had lost it was the family of five that lived in the home across the street.

Washington County Coroner Rondale Brishaber released the names of the four people who were killed as a result of the tornado that went through Pekin Friday.

Maple Syrup Fest continues PDF Print E-mail

The annual Maple Syrup Festival was in full swing this weekend, where the crowds gathered by the infamous Sugarhouse for a tasty meal of pancakes, an educational trip out to the country and a lot of family-friendly fun. The festival, now in its 21st year, is put on by Mike and Leane Goering on their Sugarbush Farm, a rural piece of property on the eastern outskirts of the Salem where they produce several varieties of maple syrup. Mike head’s up syrup production every season and Leane plans and runs the festival each year. Though it is a well ingrained community tradition now, the first festival came about almost by accident.

NOS seeks vendors, St. Vincent back on track PDF Print E-mail


The Washington County Chamber of Commerce held their regular monthly meeting on February 23 at St. Vincent Salem Hospital. Manny Alvarez, Vice President of the Chamber’s Board of Directors, welcomed the crowd and conducted the meeting.
Marketing Director Anita Bush announced that Weathers Funeral Home and Washington County Artisans and Farmers were among those inducted into the Chamber of Commerce this month. She then reminded the audience that Friday Night on the Square will take place on May 18 this year and that vendor applications are now available at the Chamber’s office. “We had 105 booths at the fall Friday Night on the Square...we’re hoping for more this time.”
