The Salem Lady Lions continued to shine out of the gate of the 2014-15 season with a 57-40 win over visiting Southwestern Tuesday night.
Salem had several issues to overcome in preparing for the game including not having school on Monday and having their pre-game walk through disrputed because Head Coach Jerry Hickey was at a conference.
The change in routine led to 33 turnovers.
Salem was led by senior Alex Davidson who scored 24 points, grabbed six rebounds, six steals and four blocks.
“Alex is shooting about 80 percent from the field so far this year and 92 percent from the free throw line so her production is through the roof,” Hickey said.
Another Lady Lion who played well was sophomore Sadie Soliday.
Hickey said she had 17 points and handled the ball more than she is usually asked to do.
If Salem is to continue winning this year, Hickey said taking care of the basketball will be the key.
“We have got to value possession of the basketball,” he said. “I want us to run, but right now we are not being smart in picking the opportunities to get out in transition. We have to recognize when there is an opportunity to get out on the break and when it is best to slow it down and run our offense.”
In addition to cutting down on the turnovers, he said his team will need to get a third player scoring consistently.
The Lady Lions will now focus their attention on playing two county rivals with a holiday sandwiched in between.
Hickey said he likes the fact that those games are during holiday and thinks it will help his team stay focused.
“I always give the girls a quote from an old football coach about a Thanksgiving rivalry game and the turkey always tasting better when you win,” he said. “Having rivalry games around the break takes a little of the pressure off the kids because the students are talking about it at school and (the break) helps them have some extra time to prepare.
Salem was back in action Saturday against visitng Madison, but lost a close one 61-58.
The Lady Lions took on West Washington Tuesday, but results from that were not available at press time.
