??    On Saturday, October 4, The Waters of Salem will be sponsoring the 1st Annual Shop with a Cop Car, Truck, and Motorcycle Show, which will be held on the Salem Square in Salem. This is an open Car, Truck, and Motorcycle show without any year, make, or model restrictions. There will also be activities and events being held that are similar to a Fall festival for families and children to enjoy.
   Admission for this event is free to the public/spectators to attend - but registration fees do apply for those entering their car in the show and competing for trophies.

    Success and Opportunity at Reading (SOAR!) once again plans to spearhead the Dictionary Project in Washington County. Part of a nationwide program (www.dictionaryproject.org ), the local initiative will put dictionaries in the hands of every third grader in all three county schools.
    SOAR! is an adult and family literacy program. The organization offers free one-on-one reading and English tutoring for adults in Washington County. SOAR! also has a family literacy component which includes Put Your Nose In A Book and The Dictionary Project.  All programs are designed to increase and promote literacy in Washington County.

?Salem Common Council votes to revamp longevity pay schedule for city workers PDF Print E-mail

?    ?    The City of Salem Common Council met in special session on Tuesday to discuss proposed changes in the longevity pay schedule for city workers.
     The current pay schedule adopted in 2007 calls for full time employees to receive an annual bonus equal to $208 for each year of employment by the city.  
    An example would be that an employee with 10 years of seniority receives a longevity pay bonus of $2080, paid out in equal installments throughout the eleventh year.

?Pekin man charged with reckless homicide in beating death of roommate PDF Print E-mail

Investigation Continuing...

    Ronald E. Dekeyser, 51, of 522 S. Gobbler Knob Road, Pekin was taken into custody on Saturday, August 30 and charged with reckless homicide in the death of David Paul Gagne, 43, of the same address.
    According to the Affidavit for Probable Cause obtained from the Washington County Prosecutor, Dustin Houchin, the Washington County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call informing them of a possibly fatality.  Town of Pekin Deputy Marshal, Jeff Miller, and Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy, Rick Stewart, arrived first on the scene and discovered Gagne, deceased on the floor in a bedroom.  According to the investigating officers, the victim appeared to have been beaten.  That assessment was later confirmed by EMTs.
    Based on information received from an informant, police learned that Gagne and Dekeyser were involved in a fight early Saturday morning.

?    The Washington County Board of Commissioners met in regular session on Wednesday, September 3 with all
members present.  The minutes of previous meetings and all claims were approved unanimously.
    As part of a presentation intended to solicit additional funding, Washington County Economic Growth Partnership
(WCEGP) Executive Director, Jerry Rose, gave the Commissioners a summary of the operating budgets for economic
development agencies in other Southern Indiana counties.
    “If we want to run with the big dogs, we need to put more money into our recruiting and marketing efforts.” said Rose.
