?First Women’s Giving Circle Grant awards $5,900 to three organizations PDF Print E-mail

?    The Women’s Giving Circle of the Washington County Community Foundation is pleased to announce they have closed out their historic first grant cycle and were able to award grants to three organizations.
    The Washington County Prosecutor’s office is the recipient of a $4,000 grant to be used for a special victims fund.  The fund will be used to provide counseling to victims of child molestation who do not qualify for Department of Family and Children assistance, Medicaid, or their insurance will not cover counseling.
    Training materials and reference guides is the focus of a $575 grant to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County.  The guides will be available to all participants (youth and adult) and parents of youth participants.
    Hoosier Hills PACT has been awarded a $1,325 grant for bathroom renovations at the domestic violence shelter.  Renovations include painting, installing a new vanity with mirrors, new lights.  A new bathtub with a handrail for client safety will also be installed.

?Air Board votes to use $5K in EDIT funds to pay for appraisals PDF Print E-mail

?    The Salem Municipal Airport Board of Aviation Commissioners (BOAC) met in regular session on Monday evening, October 27 with all members present.  The minutes of previous meetings were approved unanimously.
    The BOAC unanimously agreed to take $5,000 from its allocated $18,000 Economic Development Income Tax Fund to pay for Governmental Appraisal Services fees incurred in the process of acquiring property for the new airport facility.
    Board President, Bill Barnett, told the Board members that little was to report from project managers, R.W. Armstrong Engineers.  “Since the grant cycle for 2008 was missed, things are on hold until next year.” explained Barnett.
    Barnett gave a report on repair efforts to the security fence west of the runway that was damaged when a tree located on the golf course property blew down in the September 14 hurricane.
    In other business, the Board agreed to have Tim Peace put together guidelines in preparation to advertise for a new Flight Based Operator contract.
    When the meeting was opened up to public comment, a concern was raised about warning lights on a communications tower and a water tower being out as a result of the September storm damage.  According to Peace, responsibility for the maintenance and emergency power requirements of the lights are that of the owners of those structures.  However, it was agreed that discussion should take place with the owners of the structures to explore remedies to the problem.
    With no further business to conduct, the BOAC adjourned until its next regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, November 24.

?Eastern School Board gives recognition to EHS FFA and Principal Luedeman PDF Print E-mail

?    The Eastern School Board signed a resolution recognizing the FFA for their performance in the Harrison County Invitational, Washington County Contest and District at the  meeting held on Tuesday, October 14.
    The board also signed a resolution recognizing Linda Luedeman for her selection as the Indiana Association of School Principals District Middle School Principal of the Year.
    All minutes and payroll were approved along with approval of final payment for Physical Activities Building to Shireman Construction, salary adjustments for non-certified employees, administrators and bus drivers, first reading of mon-certified employee handbook, professional leave for Terry Thixton and  medical leave for Penny Casper.
    Other approvals include:
    Melinda Newcomb, permanent substitute, Kim Hall, medical leave, Jill Marin, three hour cafeteria position, Christy Fischer for two position in cafeteria, Marie Edwards to six hours in cafeteria, Sherry Gore increased four hours in cafeteria, creating a two hour middle school custodial position with Christy Fischer to fill the custodial position.
    Extra Curricular staff approved were: Michael Martin, fifth grade girls basketball; Jason Temple for fifth grade boys basketball coach; and Mike Batt for ninth grade boys basketball coach.
    The resignation of Brenda Hayes and Kathy Morgan as cooks were approved.
    Christian Kemker gave a brief report on an Eagles Scout project to build a director’s tower at the band practice field.
    The second reading of transfer/student policy 5111 and policies 1200, 1214, 1231, 1411/1311/4211, 3231, 3430/4430, 6150, 6520, 8310, 8900 and 9800 were approved.
     A brief hearing on the 2009 budgets, plans, and levy along with the 2009 Bus Replacement was presented by Superintendent Amick, bus a motion to close the hearing was made and approved.

?    The New Pekin Town Council met in regular session on Tuesday, October 21, with all members present.  The minutes of previous meetings, all payroll requests, all claims, and all requests for sewer adjustments were approved unanimously.
    The Council engaged in a general discussion of the process involved in annexing two areas adjacent to the current town boundaries.  The two areas in question are located directly north of the East Washington Schools campus and an area to the southeast of New Pekin in proximately to Voyles Road, Old Pekin Road, and Hurst Road.

?    The following is a reminder to voter’s of photo ID requirement at the polls, absentee voting deadlines and polling location in Washington County.
    As absentee ballots are arriving in the mailboxes across the county, Washington County Clerk, Rita Martin is reminding registered voters of absentee ballot voting deadlines and photo ID requirements.
    The clerk’s office will be open for absentee voting on Saturday, November 1, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you are planning to vote absentee by mail, your application had to be filed in the clerk’s office by October 27.
    November 3 at noon is the deadline to vote absentee in the clerk’s office and to file an application to vote absentee before the traveling board.
    Voters are required to present photo ID before casting a ballot either at the polls on election day or before voting absentee in the clerks’ office.
