Joe Newcomb spent his high school playing days with Clay Starrett passing him the ball, but when Cornell College (Iowa) traveled to Franklin on Nov. 27, the two were wearing different uniforms.
Starrett is a junior on the FC basketball team and Newcomb is a senior at Cornell. It was the first meeting between the two since they graduated from Eastern.

Two of The Depot railroad museum’s volunteers were honored at the Washington County Historical Society’s quarterly meeting Saturday, Nov. 20.
Jimmy Snook,  Clarksville, was named Volunteer of the Year for his work with The Depot’s caboose and rail car exhibit. Snook, a  retired conductor with the Louisville & Nashville and its successor railroads for 40 years, transformed Monon caboose 81402 from a static display to a real-life example  of a working caboose. He conducts tours of 81402 for individuals and groups, explains how rail motor cars were used by workers and demonstrates various railroad bells and whistles with an air-powered exhibit he helped design and create.

Community Thanksgiving dinner set for Nov. 23 PDF Print E-mail

The City of Salem is preparing to feed an estimated 250 people at the annual community Thanksgiving Dinner to be held November 23, 2010, at the American Legion Bingo Hall.  The dinner is open to all city residents and will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Mayor David Bower said area churches are invited to join in this time of fellowship and to encourage those in their congregation, who need a good holiday meal, to attend.

Cecil Smith to serve as Grand Marshal PDF Print E-mail

Cecil Smith, recent winner of the Citizen of the Year Award, presented by the Chamber of Commerce, will serve as the Grand Marshal for the Christmas Parade.  The parade is planned for Saturday, Nov. 27, 4 pm.  Parade entries are still being accepted.
Businesses are currently putting together plans for the event.  The GoodWill Store, located on Main Street, will be having a children’s coloring contest.  In addition, cookies will be served to the children visiting the store on Nov.27th.  The winners of the contest will be awarded cash prizes.

Cancer advocates mark Great American Smokeout by urging Indiana to pass smoke-free legislation PDF Print E-mail

The American Cancer Society and its advocacy affiliate, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), will celebrate the 35th Great American Smokeout on Nov. 18 by calling on Indiana state lawmakers to protect the health of Hoosier workers and patrons with the passage of a comprehensive smoke-free law. Comprehensive smoke-free policies not only protect workers and patrons from exposure to toxic secondhand smoke, but they also empower smokers to quit.
