A Clark County Sheriff’s Department Officer was on normal patrol on Tuesday morning, October 6 near Perry Crossing Road when he witnessed a vehicle approaching him traveling northbound in the southbound lane. The officer pulled over to the side of the road. According to the police report, the vehicle swerved toward the officer’s patrol car as he traveled off the road trying to avoid the vehicle but his patrol car was hit in the rear. The suspect vehicle did not stop causing the officer to pursue for nearly two miles stopping at US 31 at Morning Mist Drive.

On Sunday, Oct. 4, around 3 a.m. a Clark County police officer saw a Saturn driven by 22-year-old Jeffrey Smeltz, "fail to signal its intent to turn (west) from the Interstate 65 NB exit ramp to State Road 60."

The officer stopped the vehicle in the area of SR 60 and Hamburg Way. The arrest report states the officer noticed the smell of marijuana coming from the car and asked Smeltz if he had smoked marijuana recently. Smeltz admitted to smoking earlier in the day and told the officer there was marijuana in the center console.

During a search of the vehicle, the officer found a large amount of cash ($3,252) and approximately one pound of marijuana with an estimated street value of $3,000.

Also found during the search: a waxy substance that Smeltz identified as hash oil and several scales.

Smeltz is now charged with dealing in marijuana, hash oil or hashish, possession of marijuana, hash oil, hashish or spice, possession of paraphernalia, and maintaining a comment nuisance.

The Charlestown Parks & Recreation Department will host STAR WARS Day on Saturday, October 3 from 12 noon  to 4 p.m. at the Charlestown Arts & Enrichment Center located at 999 Water Street in Charlestown.
