    The Charlestown Youth Basketball League has announced arrangement for its 37th Annual Little Pirate Boys and Girls Basketball Tournament.
    The tournament is for area third through sixth grade boys and girls teams and will be held at Charlestown High School's Bill Dun Sports Center.
    The girls new dates are now set for March 14 and 15 while the boys new dates are March 7 and 8.
    All boys and girls divisions are set by school grade. Trophies, medals, and/or t-shirts will be awarded for qualifying team members. Trophies will be awarded to the winner and runner-up in each division. The runner-up teams will receive medals and/or t-shirts.
    Divisions will be limited to the first six teams with paid entries for a total of 24 boys and 24 girls teams. All entries must be received as soon as possible. The entry fee is $175 per team. Please return with entry form and make checks payable to CYBL (Charlestown Youth Basketball League).
    Only players feeding into the same high school may participate on a team.
    The purpose of the tournament is to expose the third through sixth grade athletes in Southern Indiana to a tournament atmosphere; to showcase the elementary cheerleaders and to raise funds for the CYBL.

The admission to the tournament is $5 for an all day pass. Teams, two coaches, cheerleaders and one sponsors are admitted free. Pre-schoolers are also admitted free.

River Ridge Longbeards to host annual Hunting Heritage banquet and fundraiser PDF Print E-mail

    The National Wild Turkey Federation, River Ridge Longbeards Chapter, will host the 2009 annual Hunting Heritage banquet and fundraiser on Saturday, March 7. The event will be held at St. Joe’s Hill Church in Sellersburg. The doors will open at 6 p.m. with dinner being served at 7:30 p.m.
    Auctions items include: prints by Bruce Miller, Thomas Kinkade, Ned Smith, Terry Reddlin and Jack Paluh. Limited edition bronzes, legacy lamp and antler coffee table plus many other items, too numerous to mention.
    There will be a silent auction and many prizes to be given away, plus games to play.
    The gun of the year is a Winchester Super X3, chambered in  .12 gauge auto featuring a elegant gold plates laser engraved commemorating the NWTF’s limited-edition.
    A single ticket will be $50, couples ticket will be $65 and a sponsor ticket will be $260. Kids, 10 years and under, are free.
    Sponsors will receive a special gift from the NWTF. When you sponsor your will receive $300 worth of tickets, and a chance at a sponsor only gun. There were only 10 sponsors last year, so that’s a 1 in 10 chance at the gun.
    They will be offering an early bird gamblers pack. For $100 you get $300 worth of chances including a chance on the gun of the year.
    They also have this year, a new member only gun to be given away. The only way to win is to bring a new member to join at the banquet. Only the new member and the person that brings them will get a chance on this gun. Adult new members only.
    They are expecting a sell out and space is limited so please get your tickets early. The deadline for early bird special is Sunday, March 1.
    Some of the games include the dice game, Wing Span and corn hole.
    They will be giving a Youth Hunt of a Lifetime away, so please bring your kids.

Charlestown allies execute successful storm survival PDF Print E-mail

    For the second time, in less than five months, Charlestown Block Watch members joined in emergency care efforts required by electrical outages caused by weather events.
    As Wednesday morning (January 28) dawned cold and icy, with 50 percent of Charlestown without electricity, city staff immediately contacted the American Red Cross and Greater Clark County School (GCCS) officials to establish shelters to provide warmth and food to anyone needing assistance. Then Block Watch captains were called to action to solicit volunteers who could provide manpower for the shelters.
    Mike Marra from GCCS assisted with getting Jonathan Jennings Elementary School open and available for one shelter, as it had electricity. The Arts & Enrichment Center (A&E) was powered by generators, and was also open for residents and deserving city employees who needed to warm-up and take a break from their continuous snow removal efforts.
    When September’s hurricane winds downed trees and took out power lines, the sunny days and warm evenings were uncomfortable, but bearable. Everyone gained a renewed appreciation for air conditioning when electric services returned.
    This ice storm, sandwiched between snowfalls, and followed by unrelenting cold was more than uncomfortable. It was a serious hazard to anyone without electric power and heat for a prolonged period.
Block Watch captains made an effort to contact participants in their districts, both to ensure everyone was okay and to put out the call for volunteers. Despite the extreme conditions, many participants were seen going door-to-door in their neighborhoods to see if anyone needed help. They provided information, such as access to oxygen and medical equipment at St. Catherine Medical Center, and the availability of warmth and food at the shelters.
    On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Block Watch members helped city employees prepare and serve meals at both shelters. Some residents spent Wednesday and Thursday nights at the shelters, with security provided by city officials and police officers. By Friday evening only 20 households in Charlestown were still without power and no one needed the shelter services overnight.
    The weather event canceled the Thursday night meeting scheduled for Districts 1 and 4, but all meetings are expected to resume in February. Block Watch meetings are held at the Arts and Enrichment Center, 999 Water Street, at 6:30 p.m. on the scheduled evenings.
    Districts 1 and 4 hold joint meetings on the last Thursday of each month, with the next meeting scheduled for February 26. There will be a special presentation by the Charlestown Police Department, as they will demonstrate how to look for drug activities in your area. Everyone is invited to attend.

To see them checking on each other and helping out; really showed how Block Watch works.”
    District 2 meets with co-captains Melissa Crawford and George Roberts on the second Monday of each month. After the snow and ice storm, George said, “People in our district checked-in on each other all week. We had a family down on [Hwy] 403 out of power until Thursday so we took them a generator. Having JJ open its doors was helpful to everyone. We appreciated that.” District 2’s next meeting is March 9, but everyone is invited to attend the February 26 meeting as well. Patrick Henry Hughes teams with NWVFD to raise money for Crusade PDF Print E-mail

    The New Washington Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting their annual chili supper to benefit the WHAS Crusade for Children at Station 1 on Saturday, February 21.
    The firemen will begin serving at 4 p.m. until the chili is gone.
    In addition to serving chili, they will offer hot dogs, chili dogs, peanut butter sandwiches, drinks and delicious desserts furnished by the New Washington Volunteer Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary.
    Patrick Henry Hughes of Louisville’s Extreme Makeover will be present to sign autographs and provide entertainment . Hughes will also be offering his CDs for sale to benefit the Crusade for Children.

Inaugural “Orange/Blue Blowout” games to be held at SCMS PDF Print E-mail

    Silver Creek Middle School is proud to present an incredible evening of fun and entertainment on Friday, February 27 at 6 p.m. in the gymnasium at the school.
    As an opportunity to raise funds for academic school trips and to make a donation to the Leukemia Foundation in honor of one of Silver Creek Middle School's former students, Jonnae Taylor, the following events will take place: first, a basketball game between the school's eighth grade girls and eighth grade boys. A trophy plaque will be given to the winner to be displayed in the school showcase; secondly, a basketball game between an “orange team” and a “blue team” of co-ed eighth grade basketball team members. A trophy plaque will be given to the winner of this game, also to be displayed in the showcase and thirdly, they will hold a basketball game between their co-ed eighth grade team members and their “teacher/staff all stars.” This game will be highlight the evening and a “Dragon Rights” trophy will be presented and showcased for the winning team.
    Entertainment at half times and between games will be provided by the Silver Creek jazz band, the Royal Sensation dance team, SCMS cheerleaders and the singing of the National Anthem and the Silver Creek fight song will be presented by “The Singing Dragons.”
    Disc jockeys from Spin Around Sound will be the Masters of Ceremonies and provide music to rock the Dragon Den.
    The concession stand will be serving Vicario's Pizza, hot dogs, nachos and snacks. The cost of the event is $3 per person.
    Each of the school's sixth, seventh and eighth grade classes are asked to show their spirit by filling the stands with their classmates and the winning grade will display a banner in its hallway showing that grade to have the true “Heart of the Dragon.”
