While most citizens are preparing their menus for the upcoming Thanksgiving day meal and looking forward to the time spent with family and friends, some have already started planning for the Christmas season.
Many citizens have taken advantage of the present from Mother Nature, the beautiful weather in early November, to begin decorating their yards and homes for the season. While those citizens have taken their hundreds of lights and made beautiful scenes, some working with the City of Charlestown have taken hundreds of thousands of lights to make Charlestown the Christmas City.
“We have 108,800 lights ready right now,” stated Josh Campbell, who is part of the mastermind behind the lighted Christmas show. Campbell, along with Mark Obermiller, have spent some 600 hours thus far, preparing for the city’s big holiday season kick-off, Light Up Charlestown.
Obermiller is locally famous for his extravagant light display at his home in Lexington. Campbell first met Obermiller when he was traveling home from visiting family in Scottsburg and noticed the light display in 2002.
“I stumbled on Mark’s display in 2002. I stopped and seen it. I then went a couple more times in 2002,” Campbell stated.

During the 2008 Thanksgiving holiday period, 15 people lost their lives in Indiana traffic crashes. More than 66 percent of those fatalities were alcohol related. Additionally, in more than two-thirds of the fatal collisions that occurred around Thanksgiving, the person killed was not wearing a seat belt.
In an effort to prevent senseless injuries and fatalities from occurring on Indiana’s roadways this Thanksgiving holiday season, Chief Steve Dean, recently announced that the Charlestown Police Department will join the Indiana State Police and more than 250 law enforcement agencies throughout the state to conduct the Safe Family Travel enforcement blitz.
Safe Family Travel is a statewide, annual enforcement campaign that combines high visibility seat belt and impaired driving patrols. The effort will take place Friday, November 13 through Sunday, November 29. During this time, Indiana law enforcement officers will work thousands of overtime hours., day and night, to ensure that motorists are driving responsibly and traveling safely on the state’s roadways.

The Clark County Drug Treatment Court Program will sponsor a food drive/Cornhole/Corn Toss tournament November 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the front lawn of the Clark County Building, 501 East Court Avenue in Jeffersonville.
This Food Drive will be the first sponsored by the treatment program.  The Drug Treatment Court wants to increase public awareness and give back to the community.
Participants are asked to donate non-perishable items which will be given to the area food bank.
For each item donated, the individual will receive four tosses.  Scores will be kept as they are in a traditional Cornhole/Corn Toss game (a corn bag in the hole has a value of three points and a corn bag on the corn-hole platform is in-the-count and is worth one point).
The person with the most points at the end of the day will win a prize.  (Prize still to be determined)
The more you donate, the more points you can score and the better your chance of winning!
