The Salem Lions saw one of their best ever seasons in baseball come to an end Tuesday night (June 2), when they fell 7-6 to the Charlestown Pirates in extra innings.
Salem led 5-3 after a complete inning of play, but the Pirates chipped away slowly and gradually got back in the game.
With two runners on base in the top of the first inning, the Lions’ Hayden Burton hit to center, and it barely turned into a home run when it went over the fence.
A single and a pair of walks later, a single by Josiah Farnsley scored the Lions’ Logan Walker and Joe Philpott, giving them a 5-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first frame, the Pirates came back, scoring three runs of their own.
Devon Thorstad sent in two runs for the pirates when he hit a single into right field, scoring Cameron Metzger and Matt Hall.

The Floyd Central girls’ tennis team defeated the New Albany Bulldogs 5-0 Wednesday in the championship game of the Floyd Central girls’ tennis regional. A day earlier, the Lady Highlanders won 3-2 over a tough Silver Creek squad. It was their 11th overall regional title in girls’ tennis, and the
Floyd Central girls’ tennis volunteer assistant coach Brandon Miller said that the team has been at their best all through the state tournament.
“All the girls played their best tennis,” Miller said.
New Albany drew the praise and respect of Miller, noting that with the two schools being big Floyd County rivals and Hoosier Hills Conference foes, the Lady Bulldogs were coming into a “hostile environment”.
“New Albany always has great teams,” Miller said.
Miller said that his father, head girls’ tennis coach Rick Miller, was the type who prepared intensely for all teams, not overlooking anybody.
“Don’t overlook any team,” Brandon Miller said. “We prepare the same way every time. We try to get mentally ready for a grueling match.”
For example, the first round match with Silver Creek was a close 3-2 win for the Lady Highlanders.
“It was very close; closer than anybody would have liked it to be.”

Henryville wins 5-1 over Lanesville in Class A softball sectional finals PDF Print E-mail

Henryville used a big 4-0 seventh inning to defeat the no. 11 ranked Lanesville Eagles in softball at Henryville Friday afternoon.
The Lady Hornets won their third consecutive sectional title in Class A in the process.
The game was tied 1-1 headed into the final inning, when Henryville got what Lanesville coach Bill Krammes called a couple of “bloop singles”, but they actually lost the contest in the early innings when they failed to be aggressive on the base paths, and score a couple of times, according to Krammes.
In the first inning, Krammes said that after Ashley Schoen stole third base, she should have gone home and scored after an errant throw by Henryville, but they failed to send her home.
After that, another situation where the Lady Eagles failed to score made a big diference in the game, according to Krammes.
“We messed up as coaches,” said Krammes. “We let the kids down.”
“They got some lucky hits,” Krammes said of Henryville.
Ashley Dickerson of Henryville hit a two run single during the fateful seventh inning comeback for the Lady Hornets.
Teammate Rebecca Snodgrass had a pair of base hits, including a single which drove in a Henryville run in the first frame.
