Monday (Nov. 24) was the start of the high school boys’ basketball season for the Christian Academy Warriors and the Floyd Central Highlanders.

Todd Sturgeon the new coach of Floyd Central received his first win defeating CAI 59-56.

Floyd Central came out in the game with 2-3 zone which proved affective as Floyd Central lead 21-8 at the end of the first quarter.

CAI and FC both switched from 2-3 to man-to-man defense throughout the second quarter.

Christian Academy took advantage from the three point line bringing the half to a close with the score Floyd Central 33-22.

FC had a 44-40 advantage in the third quarter when CAI went on a 7-2 run.

CAI had momentum late in the 4th as they were only down by three.

Senior Aaron Eldridge of CAI tied the game at 56 when he hit a 3-pointer with 15 seconds remaining in the game. The game concluded when sophomore Tyler Kimm hit a three as time expired giving FC its first season opener win since 2011.

The Highlanders were back in action Tuesday against visiting Clarksville.

Their next game will be Saturday at Bloomington South.

There will be a toy giveaway at Palmyra Baptist Church, which is located at 14660 Greene St. NE.

There is a large selection of clean used toys, which they will give away on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m.

If you have trouble providing toys for your children, you are invited to come get some!

Borden: Bachman 15, Franklin 2, Gray 8, Caleb Hart 15, Thompson 5, Stonecipher 2, Noah Hart 4.

Eastern: Newcomb 27, McDaniel 6, Roberts 4, Murphy 13, Doebler 10, Emmert 1.

3-pt fieldgoals: Borden (4) Bachman 2, Thompson 2; Eastern (5) Newcomb 5.

 

Statistical highlights (stats are unofficial)

EHS: Newcomb was 5 of 7 from beyond the three-point arc.

McDaniel and Roberts did not play last year for EHS and made an immediate impact.

McDaniel scored six points and grabbed six rebounds.

Roberts had four points and four rebounds.

McDaniel was one of the top cross country runners for EHS this fall and Roberts was the starting quarterback for the EHS football team.

Head Coach Scott Newcomb said both are athletes and are welcome additions to the team.

Alex Doebler scored 10 points, but had a busy night stuffing stats. He had five rebounds and five steals in Eastern's win.

 

Borden: Noah Hart was a driving force in Borden's junior varsity win over Eastern and scored four points and had two rebounds, all of which came at crucial points of the game.

Gray had eight points, but led everyone with 10 rebounds in the game.

Bachman and Hart scored 15 points each for the Braves.

 
Salem, Henryville win, EHS loses at Mitchell PDF Print E-mail

A couple of local basketball teams got the season started last night.

The following are results from those games:

Salem-Crawford

Salem's Alex Davidson poured in 24 points and Sadie Soliday added 15 in a 53-46 win at Crawford County.

The Lady Lions (1-0) trailed at the end of the first quarter , 15-12, but used a 10-4, second quarter run to grab a slim lead at intermission.

The Lady Wolfpack again started the third quarter strong leading 31-26 heading into the final period.

Salem's offense came alive in the final eight minutes as they scored 27 points on their way to the win.

Salem's next game will be Tuesday, Nov. 18 at home against Southwestern.

Henryville romps

Henryville (1-0) allowed just two points in the second half as they routed Irvington Prep 71-6.

Eastern falls

The Eastern Lady Musketeers opened the season at Mitchell and suffered a 47-43 loss to the Lady Jackets.

Eastern will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Southwestern Hanvoer.
