Wednesday, 22 July 2009 00:00

Pekin residents will soon have a new place to shop. A Dollar General store is currently being constructed at 424 East State Road 60. The store will have 9,014 total square feet, and will employ approximately six to ten people, depending on the need. In this current down turned economy, these new job openings will be a much welcomed addition to Pekin families.
The store itself will feature a new layout which will make shopping easier for customers. Highlights of this store will include, more convenient cash register locations away from the main entryway, seasonal products featured in the center of the store, coolers in the front of the store plus more visible department signage inside.
Dollar General offers customers brands and products used most, such as health and beauty products, cleaning supplies, housewares, stationary, seasonal goods, basic clothing, packaged food products, refrigerated foods and frozen foods. The majority of products sold in the store are $10 or less, with nearly 25% of products priced at $1 or less.
This will be the first Dollar General store to serve Pekin and the second in Washington County. Dollar General currently has 320 stores in Indiana.
Dollar General also supports literacy and education, having founded the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. At the cash register of every Dollar General store, customers interested in learning how to read, speak English or get their GED may pick up a brochure with a postage-paid reply card that they can mail in for referral to a local organization which offers free literacy services.
At this time an exact date of the grand opening is not known, but construction should be completed by January of 2010. Temple and Temple Excavating & Paving, Inc. is handling the construction.

St. Mary’s of Navilleton hosts annual church picnic PDF Print E-mail

Since 1906 St. Mary’s of Navilleton (near Galena) has hosted their annual church picnic, and this year’s version was held Sunday (July 19) at the church grounds, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Things have changed over the years, such as the games and booths, but the dinner still has chicken, as well as all of the usual foods you would associate with a picnic.
This year, a large area was set aside for corn hole to be played, as this is one of the more popular games at church picnics and similar events.
If you weren’t interested in corn hole, you could play bingo, and hopefully win some cash.
A number of drawings for cash were also available, for those who bought tickets for those drawings.
And of course, there were the usual standbys, such as the cake wheel, and a plant wheel. At the wheel games, participants would put down a dime on a number on a board, and someone would spin a large wheel. If a lucky individual had the correct number, they won one of the prizes in that booth.
There were also plenty of games for children, and this included face painting, one of the more popular booths at the picnic.
