Ashley Gettelfinger, a 15 year old sophomore at North Harrison High School, won a brand new 2009 Ford Focus as the grand prize in the school’s Character in Education program, held Friday afternoon at the school’s football field. Ten tickets were drawn for the car prize, and each of the ten finalists was given a key to try in the car’s ignition. The winning student would of course be able to start the car’s ignition.
Gettelfinger was the ninth of 10 students who tried for the prize.
The program allows students to add tickets to a pot for things such as high grades, perfect attendance, or having no disciplinary referrals.
A total of 12,396 tickets through the year were in the pot from the year.
The nine students who were finalists for the car were given nice consolation prizes, such as a lap top computer, which was won by senior Katie Tekulve. Besides the car, which was donated by Jim Hodge, owner of Heritage Ford Mercury in Corydon, another 59 sponsors donated prizes, such as an iPod, a Nintendo video game, a class ring, and others. Approximately $6,700 in prizes besides the car was given away in the program this year.

The Lanesville Lady Eagles eked out a big 3-2 victory over the North Harrison Lady Cats at Lanesville Monday afternoon (May 4) in varsity softball action.
In the most recent coaches’ poll, Lanesville was ranked no. 12 in Class 1A, and in Class 3A, North Harrison was ranked no. 15.
Lanesville started off scoring in the bottom of the 1st inning, when Ashley Schoen hit a round trip solo shot over the left center field fence.
North Harrison took a brief 2-1 lead in the top of the 2nd inning, when Sasha Grangier and Alyssa McAfee both singled safely for the Lady Cats. A bit later, Kristin Hoehn scored a North Harrison runner with a successful bunt. Then Lady Cats’ pitcher Courtney Crone scored another runner with a ground out.
The Lady Eagles didn’t sit still in the bottom of the 2nd frame.
Drawing a walk for the Lady Eagles was Elizabeth Sacasas, and Kari McCormick managed to single in a close play at first base.
An error gave Sacasas a chance to score and tie the game up at 2-2, and Erin Dorgay later scored the winning run on a routine ground out.
Neither team managed to score the remaining five innings of play.

The Lanesville girls’ tennis squad won a 3-2 decision over the team from Henryville Thursday at the Lanesville courts.
The match was not a Southern Athletic Conference match; the match between the two schools on April 15 was the official conference match. Incidentally, Lanesville won that match 3-2 as well.
Caroline Turcotte, normally Lanesville’s no. 1 singles player, was ill, so instead LeAnne Myers played in the no. 1 position.
Henryville’s Casey Guernsey defeated Myers at no. 1 singles, 7-6, 7-5.
The line up was switched around at several other positions as well.
