Henryville used a big 4-0 seventh inning to defeat the no. 11 ranked Lanesville Eagles in softball at Henryville Friday afternoon.
The Lady Hornets won their third consecutive sectional title in Class A in the process.
The game was tied 1-1 headed into the final inning, when Henryville got what Lanesville coach Bill Krammes called a couple of “bloop singles”, but they actually lost the contest in the early innings when they failed to be aggressive on the base paths, and score a couple of times, according to Krammes.
In the first inning, Krammes said that after Ashley Schoen stole third base, she should have gone home and scored after an errant throw by Henryville, but they failed to send her home.
After that, another situation where the Lady Eagles failed to score made a big diference in the game, according to Krammes.
“We messed up as coaches,” said Krammes. “We let the kids down.”
“They got some lucky hits,” Krammes said of Henryville.
Ashley Dickerson of Henryville hit a two run single during the fateful seventh inning comeback for the Lady Hornets.
Teammate Rebecca Snodgrass had a pair of base hits, including a single which drove in a Henryville run in the first frame.
Krammes was happy with the play of his team; he just wished the outcome would have been different.
“We hit the ball well’ we fielded the ball well,” he said.
With a pair of freshmen, three sophomores, two juniors, and two seniors in the line up, Krammes has a bright future in mind for his team.
“From the beginning of the year, to the end of the year, they’ve improved more than any team I’ve coached,” he said. Krammes estimates he has coached (as an assistant or as a head coach) 693 high school athletic contests as of the game with Henryville.
Lanesville ended their season with an 18-4 record; Henryville has a slate of 24-4.
